Gutter cleaning is seasonal work, and Birmingham is a green city. Gutters fill fastest in the tree-lined areas: Moseley, Hall Green, Harborne, Selly Park and Sutton Coldfield, where properties near Sutton Park and on mature plots collect heavy leaf litter, moss and silt.
The pattern is predictable. Gutters block through October and November, and the problem announces itself with the first sustained winter rain, water sheeting over the front edge, a downpipe that gurgles and backs up, or a damp stain appearing down an external wall. By that point the damage has already started, which is why we would rather clear them in autumn than rescue them in January.
We clear gutters from the ground with a vacuum pole that reaches up to three storeys, so nothing leans on the fascia, the render or a conservatory roof. Leaves, moss and silt come out through the hose, the downpipes are flushed to show the water runs, and a camera on the pole head lets you see the gutter for yourself. Under the mature trees of Moseley, Harborne or Sutton Coldfield the clear that matters is late autumn, once the leaves are down.

The rear extensions across Selly Oak are notorious for blocked gutters and overflowing downpipes.
Rear gutters under mature garden trees fill fast here. Cleared, flushed and checked.
Terraced runs backing onto the canal hold moss as well as leaf, so they are cleared and then flushed through to the downpipe.
If your property is somewhere else in Birmingham or the West Midlands, we almost certainly cover it. See all the areas we serve.
Gutter cleaning is quoted per property, usually from photos, on the length of the runs, the height and how much is in there. A standard semi in Cotteridge or Northfield is a straightforward job. A three-storey Victorian villa in Edgbaston with high parapet guttering, or a large detached house in Sutton Coldfield with long runs and years of accumulation, takes considerably longer.
Neighbouring terraces often share a continuous gutter run, as in Bearwood, Kings Heath and Selly Oak. On a shared run a blocked outlet next door can hold water along the section beside it, so if your neighbours agree, clearing the whole run on the same visit is the convenient way to do it.
Once a year as a minimum, ideally in late autumn once the leaves are down. Twice a year for properties under mature trees: that means most of Moseley, Hall Green, Sutton Coldfield and the tree-lined roads of Harborne and Selly Park.

Good to know
Once a year as a minimum. Twice a year if you are under mature trees, which covers most of Moseley, Hall Green, Sutton Coldfield and the leafier roads in Harborne and Selly Park. Late autumn is the key clear, after leaf fall but before sustained winter rain.
No. We clear gutters from the ground with a pole-mounted vacuum system reaching up to three storeys. Nothing rests against your guttering, fascia or render, which is safer for us and avoids marking or damaging the building.
Water sheeting over the front edge in rain, a downpipe that gurgles or backs up, plants growing out of the gutter, damp staining running down an external wall, or water pooling at the base of the wall. Any of those means it needs clearing now rather than at the next convenient moment.
Yes, as standard. A clear gutter draining into a blocked downpipe still overflows, so flushing the downpipes is the only way to know the whole run is genuinely flowing.
We photograph it and show you, and we tell you whether it needs a repair or a clean. We do not carry out gutter repairs ourselves, so there is nothing in it for us to overstate the problem.
Yes. Rooted growth is common on neglected runs, especially in Sutton Coldfield and Moseley. We remove the roots and the silt bed they are growing in, not just the visible plant, otherwise it simply comes back.
Yes, if next door agrees. Shared continuous runs are common on the terraces in Bearwood, Kings Heath and Selly Oak, and clearing only your half may not solve the problem.
