Sheldon Gutter Cleaning Round a Hipped 1930s Roof
The 1930s semi has a detail that catches people out when the quote arrives. These roofs are hipped, not gabled, so instead of two runs front and back, a semi’s gutter runs along three sides. Add a rear extension with its own run at a lower level, as many Sheldon houses have, and there is noticeably more to clear than the frontage suggests.
How fast it fills depends on which part of the estate you are in. Along the Sheldon Country Park and Old Rectory Farm boundary the load is heavy and organic all year: leaf, twig, moss shed off the tiles, and a good deal of bird mess. Further in, away from the tree line, an annual clear is plenty. We will tell you which you are, because a mid-estate house does not need two visits.

Overflow that washes silt across the drive
A blocked run on one of these houses announces itself in a particular way. The downpipe usually discharges at the edge of the driveway, so when the gutter backs up the overflow washes silt straight across the hardstanding you have just had cleaned, and pools against the side wall of the house. The other Sheldon detail is what sits directly below the gutter line: uPVC fascia and soffit that have gone chalky grey with organic film. Once a run is cleared, that band is the next thing you notice, because a clean gutter with a grey fascia above the bay looks worse than neither being done at all.
- Hipped roofs carrying gutter on three sides of a semi, where a gable would have only front and back
- Rear extensions on many Sheldon semis, with a second run at a lower level that fills independently
- Country park and Old Rectory Farm boundary streets taking leaf, twig, moss and bird mess right through the year
- Downpipes discharging at the drive edge, so an overflow silts the hardstanding and pools against the side wall
- Chalky grey uPVC fascias and soffits directly under the run, which stand out sharply once the gutter itself is clear
Set up on your driveway, every side cleared from the ground
A pole-mounted vacuum, set up on your driveway and worked from ground level, so nothing rests against the fascia, the conservatory frame or the bay roof. We take out the moss and silt bed as well as the loose leaf, because a run stripped of leaf alone will be sitting in water again by January. Each downpipe is then flushed and watched at the drive edge to prove the whole thing genuinely runs. The camera goes along the fascia and soffit line at the same time, and if you want that band washed while the kit is already out, we quote it there and then, with no return visit.
- Vacuum worked from the drive at ground level, with nothing leaned against fascia, bay roof or conservatory frame
- Moss and silt bed lifted as well as leaf, so the run is not blocked again by midwinter
- Every downpipe flushed and watched at the discharge point, since a clear gutter feeding a blocked pipe still overflows
- Fascia and soffit condition photographed, and the chalky grey band quoted for washing while we are already set up

Country park edge against mid-estate
The dividing line in Sheldon is the tree cover. Roads backing onto Sheldon Country Park and the Old Rectory Farm meadows are the ones that fill, and a run left two or three years there can have rooted growth in it. Deeper into the estate, on the streets towards St Giles’ Church and the Coventry Road, it is mostly roof grit and moss rather than leaf. October and November are when the whole area wants clearing at once, and Sheldon is covered on set days, so booking early in the autumn gets you a better date. You do not need to be in, and the long drive gives us rear access without asking anyone to unlock a gate.
Three sides and an extension: why hipped roofs run long
Run length sets the price, not the width of the house, which is exactly why the hipped roof matters to the number. A standard Sheldon semi has three sides of gutter plus whatever the rear extension adds, and a conservatory below that has its own separate gutter again. A run that has not been touched for four or five years, with rooted seedlings and a solid silt bed, takes longer than an annual clear, so a first visit is dearer than the ones that follow it. Pairing the gutters with the conservatory roof, the fascias and the drive on one booked day means one visit, not four.
Late autumn for most of B26, twice by the country park
Once a year for most of B26, booked for late autumn once the leaf is actually down, not in September while it is still on the tree. Twice a year earns its keep along the country park and Old Rectory Farm boundary, with a second clear in late spring after the seed and blossom drop. If a run is already overflowing onto your drive, that wants doing now, whatever the season, because standing water gets into the fascia and turns a clean into a repair.

Frequently asked questions
The roof is hipped. It slopes on all four sides, not just front and back, and the gutter follows it, so on a Sheldon semi your run goes along three sides plus whatever the rear extension added.
No. Everything is done with a pole-mounted vacuum from the driveway, which on these plots is the ideal working platform. Ladder feet on a conservatory frame or a ladder top on a uPVC fascia both cause damage that costs a great deal more than the clean did.
Yes, a very obvious one. Houses along the Sheldon Country Park and Old Rectory Farm boundary take leaf, twig, moss and bird mess all year and generally want two clears. Houses in the middle of the estate manage perfectly well on one, and we will say which side of that line you are on.
Yes, and it is worth asking, because that grey band is organic film, not damage to the plastic and it washes off. People replace fascias in B26 that only ever needed cleaning, which is an expensive mistake.
Yes, and it is the sensible way to book it. Gutters, conservatory roof, fascias and the drive on one planned day takes one day off your calendar, not four.
