Sparkhill Gutter Cleaning by the Park and Along the Terraces
The streets around Sparkhill Park carry a heavy gutter load. The avenue of mature trees in the park sheds heavily onto the roofs and gutters facing it, and it does not stop at leaves: sap and honeydew come down with them through late summer and bind the leaf litter into a mat that will not wash through. Those runs cannot be scooped clear and left. They need lifting out and then flushing, or the downpipe stays partly plugged and the problem returns in the first heavy week of rain.
Everywhere else in B11 the driver is neglect, because nobody is looking. A building split into four or five lets has no owner-occupier standing in the yard noticing that water is sheeting over the front edge. Tenants will not ring anybody about a downpipe that gurgles. So the first anybody hears of it is a damp patch spreading across a top-floor wall, by which point clearing the gutter is necessary but no longer sufficient.

Sap-bound leaf by the park and shared terrace runs
Two things make gutter work here specific. First, the park edge properties take an unusually concentrated leaf and sap load for an inner Birmingham area, and the sticky binding is what turns an annual clear into a twice-yearly one. Second, the tenure: in a subdivided house the roofline is nobody’s job, the freeholder may live nowhere near B11, and damp inside a let is a repair the landlord has to deal with, not a decorating job. Add the terraced form, where a single length spans several houses, and clearing your own section while the obstruction sits two doors up achieves very little. Access is the last complication: these streets have no room to foot a ladder.
- Leaf and sap fall from the Sparkhill Park avenue binding debris into a mat that will not flush through
- Guttering that runs unbroken over several rooflines, so the blockage is rarely above the house that reports it
- Absent freeholders, and tenants who let an overflowing downpipe go unmentioned until damp appears indoors
- Damp reaching a top-floor let, which then becomes a repair the landlord has to deal with quickly
- Kerbs parked solid and frontages hard against the pavement, leaving nowhere safe to stand a ladder
Carbon poles from the path where there is no forecourt
Clearing is done from ground level using a vacuum head on carbon poles, which on these streets is the only workable approach: the frontages sit on the path and there is no forecourt to foot a ladder from. We take out silt, moss and the compacted sap-bound litter instead of skimming loose leaves off the top, because it is the compacted layer that holds standing water. Downpipes are then flushed and watched at the gully, since a clear gutter feeding a plugged pipe still comes over the front edge. Splits, sagging lengths and failed joints are photographed and sent to whoever is paying.
- Vacuum head on carbon poles, worked off the path or the rear yard, with nothing resting on fascia, render or pipework
- Sap-bound litter and silt lifted out, not skimmed, since that layer is what actually holds water
- Every downpipe flushed and watched at the gully before we call the run clear
- Findings photographed and sent to the freeholder or agent, who is generally not the person on site

The park avenue, and the runs nobody is watching
The heaviest work is on the properties facing and backing onto Sparkhill Park, where the tree line does the damage, and we would rather do a whole row along that edge in one visit than pick off single addresses. Away from the park it is the terraces and converted villas on the roads behind the trading strip, where the trigger is usually a tenant finally reporting damp. Rear runs are reached through the entry between houses, so the gate needs unlocking and the bins moving before we arrive. Autumn is the pressure point, so the park-edge streets are booked in blocks.
Park-edge litter and blocked pipes in a B11 gutter price
A two-storey terrace taken by itself is a modest job and quick to price. Two things push it up. A park-edge length holding a season of sap-bound litter takes longer than one holding dry leaves, and the pipe below it often wants rodding rather than just a flush. And doing a single house out of a shared terrace length is only ever half a fix, so we would sooner quote three or four neighbouring properties together, clearing the whole length in one visit, than take money for something next door will flood again within the month. Landlords with several buildings on one street can have them quoted and cleared together.
Late autumn yearly, twice along the park boundary
Once a year clears a typical Sparkhill terrace, and the slot to want is late in the autumn, after the fall has finished and ahead of the settled winter rain. Anything along the park boundary is the exception and really wants two visits, one after the spring blossom and seed have come down and one once the leaves have finished. Converted buildings with absent owners are worth putting on a regular annual booking, simply because nobody living there will ever ring to tell you it is needed.

Frequently asked questions
It is the avenue of mature trees along that edge. They drop far more than the odd street tree, and the sap and honeydew that come down with the leaves glue the litter into a mat. Dry leaf fall will often wash itself through a downpipe. A sap-bound mat will not, so it sits there and holds water all winter.
Because whatever is causing your overflow frequently sits above somebody else’s bedroom: these terraces carry one unbroken length over several rooflines. Doing the whole row in a single visit is what clears it. Where the neighbours or their agents will agree a date between them, we book it that way.
From the ground, with a vacuum head on poles. Sparkhill frontages sit right on the pavement with the kerb parked out, so no ladder is ever involved. It reaches comfortably to a three-storey converted villa and nothing rests against your brickwork or your neighbour’s car.
Possibly; it is the first thing to rule out, since an overflowing length soaks the wall directly under it. But if the run has split, dropped off the fascia or lost a joint, clearing it changes nothing at all. We photograph what we find and tell you what it shows. We sell no roofline repairs, so nothing about that diagnosis benefits us.
Through the entry between the houses, provided it is unlocked and somebody has shifted the bins and the bikes. On a shared building that normally means giving the tenants a day’s warning. A gated entry with nobody in makes the rear length simply unreachable, so we would sooner move the visit than come out and do half a job.
