Small Heath Gutter Cleaning from the Pavement

Access, not leaves, is what makes gutter work here its own thing. A large share of these terraces have no rear vehicle access at all, and the entry between houses is often gated, shared between four households or stacked with bins and bikes. So the assumption behind most gutter quotes, that somebody will walk equipment through to a back garden, does not hold in B10. We set up on the street, run the pole from the pavement, and clear the front run properly from there. The rear run needs a way through the entry; where there is none, we tell you the back was left and it is not charged.

On a street of Victorian terraces the gutter often runs on from house to house along the row. We clear your length and flush your downpipe, and if the neighbours want theirs done at the same visit, it is easy to add them, which saves everybody arranging a separate day.

Slate grit, litter and pigeons, not leaves, in a B10 gutter

What fills a gutter on the streets off the Coventry Road owes little to trees. It is roof grit and moss washing down off old slate, crisp packets and carrier bags lifted off a busy high street, pigeon nesting material, and years of fine silt compacted into a bed that holds standing water. From a pavement directly below the gutter nobody can see any of that, so the first sign is usually a damp patch on a bedroom wall or water sheeting down the brick of a frontage in the first heavy rain of winter.

  • Streets where the entry is padlocked or impassable, putting the entire setup out on the pavement
  • Guttering running along a whole terrace, where each house’s length and downpipe still has to carry its own water
  • Roof grit and moss shedding off ageing slate into a gutter nobody can see into from below
  • Wind-blown litter off the high street and pigeon nesting material lodged in the run
  • Damp appearing on a bedroom wall as the first symptom, by which point water has been getting in for weeks

Working from the kerb when the entry is shut

The pole-mounted vacuum works from the kerb, which keeps us off a frontage that sits right on the footway and keeps a clear path for people walking past. The nozzle goes along the full length and lifts the compacted silt and moss from the base of the gutter, since that bed is what holds water in a shallow terrace run. We then run water through each downpipe to prove it carries away, including any that drops to a gully out the back. Cracked sections, dropped brackets or failed joints are photographed for you; guttering repairs are not something we offer.

  • Pole-mounted vacuum worked from the pavement, with nothing resting on a frontage that sits on the footway
  • Silt and compacted moss lifted from the base of the gutter, where it holds standing water
  • Every downpipe flushed with water to prove the run drains away
  • Photographs of any cracked or sagging section, since we clean gutters and do not sell the repair

Clearing a shared terrace run from the street

Nearly all of this is on the terraced streets running back off the Coventry Road, with more of the same towards Small Heath station and over on the B9 side. Two things shape a booking. First, whether we can reach the rear at all, which we establish before quoting, not on the morning. Second, parking, because a pole vacuum needs the van within a sensible distance of the frontage, so a mid-morning slot after the school and work traffic has cleared is easier than eight o’clock. Small Heath is covered on set days, so booking ahead is the way to get the date you want. Late autumn suits most houses, though the moss and grit here arrive in any season.

A modest run, unless the silt has set hard

A single two-storey terrace is a modest length at a modest height, and the price reflects that. It goes up where years of silt have set hard in the gutter, because that takes longer to break out and the downpipe may need rodding before it will run. A front-only clear, where the entry is closed, is priced as exactly that. Neighbours who want their runs done can join the same morning.

Once a year in late autumn, before the winter rain

Once a year suits most Small Heath terraces, done in late autumn once the roof has shed what it is going to shed and before the long winter rain. Houses standing under the mature trees around Small Heath Park have leaf fall to add to the grit, so twice a year is worth it there. A run that has never been cleared out is a longer first visit, and the yearly clear after that is quick.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, the front run. Where the entry is padlocked, shared between four households or simply impassable, we run the pole and vacuum from the pavement and clear the front length from there. The rear run needs a way through to reach it, so without access we tell you the back was not done and do not charge for it.

They can if they want to, and a word over the front wall is usually enough. Each house’s length and downpipe carries its own water, so your clear works on its own, but if two or three houses on the row book the same morning, the pole moves along from one van position and the row is done together.

Often, yes, since water spilling over the edge lands on solid brickwork with no cavity to stop it travelling inwards. Not always, though. A split length, a joint that has given up or a section that has dropped away from the fascia will keep leaking however clean it is. Where that is what we find, you get the photograph and a straight answer, and we do not sell the repair.

No, near enough for the pole to reach the frontage, which is usually within a few doors. Parking on these streets is tight, and a mid-morning slot once the commuter cars have gone is generally easier than a first thing one. Tell us what your street is like and we will pick the time accordingly.

From the ground you are looking for water spilling over the front edge in rain, a downpipe that gurgles or backs up, greenery visibly growing out of the run, or staining down the brickwork. On a pavement-edge terrace the overflow tends to soak the frontage rather than the ground, so the stain is the giveaway.
