Alvechurch Gutter Cleaning Under Hedgerow and Valley Trees

Alvechurch gutters carry a heavier load than a typical city suburb. The village sits among hedgerow, mature standard trees, old orchard remnants and open field boundaries, and through October and November the lot of it ends up in the run. Hedge trimming in late summer gets there first, laying down fine woody clippings, so by the time the leaves come there is already a mat waiting for them to settle onto and hold.

On top of that sits the valley. Humidity off the River Arrow, the canal and the marina keeps roof slopes mossy, and that moss sheds into the gutter and beds down as silt underneath the leaf litter. In the old core there is a second constraint: original guttering that a ladder top will distort, on buildings where damage becomes a listed building matter, never a quick repair. So everything here is worked from ground level, on every job.

Hedge clippings, heavy leaf fall and valley moss, in that order

A rural gutter blocks in layers, which is exactly why clearing the leaves alone fails out here. First come hedge and grass fragments from late summer cutting. Then a heavy autumn drop from trees and hedgerow growing far closer to the roof line than street planting in a city ever gets. Then a continuous shed of moss off damp valley roof slopes, bedding down as silt at the bottom of the run. By midwinter the gutter holds a saturated mat, far heavier than loose leaves. On village properties there is also nowhere safe to stand a ladder, because guttering, timber framing and soft brick all mark or move under one.

  • Hedgerow and mature standard trees growing right up against the roof line, unlike city street planting
  • Late summer hedge trimming, laying fine woody debris in the run before the leaves even fall
  • Moss shedding continuously off damp valley roof slopes and bedding down as silt
  • Original guttering on listed and historic fabric, which a ladder top distorts permanently
  • Long runs and several roof planes on the detached valley houses, well beyond what the frontage suggests

Lifting the whole layered mat from ground level

A pole-mounted vacuum reaches up to three storeys from ground level, so nothing rests on your guttering, fascia, timber framing or soft brick. We lift the silt and moss bed as well as the leaf, because a run stripped of leaf alone will be blocked again by January in this valley. Downpipes are flushed afterwards to prove the whole thing genuinely runs. The camera on the pole records the condition of the run as we go, and on a listed building that record is worth having before anybody starts talking about replacing sections.

  • Pole-mounted vacuum worked from ground level, nothing touching historic guttering or soft brick
  • The moss and silt bed lifted as well as the leaf, since leaf is only the top layer out here
  • Downpipes flushed and proved, because a clear gutter feeding a blocked pipe still spills
  • A photographed condition report, worth having on a listed building before any repair is discussed

More detail on the equipment and the order of work: how we do gutter cleaning, step by step.

Late autumn in the Arrow valley

The village finishes dropping its leaves inside a fairly tight window, usually by late November, and the wet weather arrives behind it. We cover The Square and the older lanes, the streets running down through the valley, and the properties along the canal and towards the marina, where tree cover over the roofs is heaviest. Detached houses backing onto fields or paddock hedge carry the biggest load of all. We cover B48 on set days, so book ahead of the late November rush. Nobody needs to be at home, though we do need to get round the back, and on the larger valley plots that usually means a gate left unlocked for us.

Run length, roof planes and years of build-up on a B48 house

Price follows the length of the run, the height, and how much is sitting in it. A modern valley semi cleared last autumn is quick. A detached house with several roof planes, a rear extension, a garage run and a conservatory gutter carries far more metreage than the frontage suggests, and the quote follows the run, whatever the width of the house. A gutter left five years with seedlings rooted in it takes considerably longer, so a first visit generally costs more than the ones that follow. Photographs of the back of the house help us quote accurately before anyone arrives.

Late November every year, and a spring clear under hedgerow

Annually as a minimum, booked for late November once the drop has finished rather than in September while it is all still overhead. Twice a year is worth it where a property backs onto hedgerow or standing trees, or sits low in the valley where moss sheds all year round, with the second clear in late spring after blossom and seed. If a run is spilling now, do not wait for the season, because standing water gets into fascia and soffit.

Frequently asked questions

No. A ladder top distorts original guttering and its feet mark soft brick and timber framing, and on listed fabric that is a consent problem, well beyond a bit of touching up. The whole run is cleared with a pole-mounted vacuum from the ground, which is the only reason we can work on these buildings at all.

Because your trees are closer and your air is wetter. Hedgerow and standard trees out here grow right up to the roof line, late summer hedge cutting adds a woody layer before autumn even starts, and valley humidity keeps moss shedding off the roof all year. A suburban gutter simply does not get fed at that rate.

Yes, and in this valley the moss matters more. It sheds off damp roof slopes continuously and beds down as a silt layer that holds water long after the leaves have gone, so a run cleared of leaf alone reblocks within a wet month. We lift the bed, not just the top.

Largely, yes. Late November, once the village has finished dropping, is the better date. Clearing in September out here mostly means paying for it twice, because the heaviest fall is still to come. The exception is a run already overflowing, which should be dealt with straight away and not left to sit through winter.

Yes. We photograph it and show you. We do not carry out gutter repairs, so there is nothing in it for us to overstate. On a listed building in the core, replacing guttering is a conversation with Bromsgrove District Council before it is a conversation with a contractor.
