Gutter Cleaning for Stechford’s Rendered Semis
In Stechford the valley fills the gutters. The Cole corridor gives the ward wide semi-wild green swathes, and the willow, scrub and seed heads growing on damp ground put material into the air for much of the year, well beyond a few weeks of November leaf fall. On top of that, roofs on the shaded valley side carry heavy moss, and moss washes off the tiles into the gutter in every season. That is why one autumn visit is not always enough on this side of B33.
The consequence is what makes this job different in Stechford. So much of the stock is rendered or pebbledashed that an overflow does visible damage, staining the elevation below it in a way that brick simply shrugs off. Once the wall has been marked, clearing the gutter does not remove the mark. So the sooner the run is cleared and flushed, the less of the wall is marked.

Wet silt, moss and render staining on the valley side
Three things drive the work here. The floodplain keeps everything damp, so moss and silt in a gutter stay wet and compact into a mat instead of drying out and blowing away. The building stock is rendered, so the overflow has somewhere ugly to go, and on a north-facing elevation the wet wall then grows algae in broad green sheets. On a let house the owner may not live there to hear a gurgling downpipe, so the first sign can be a damp patch on a back bedroom wall in February. Semi pairs share a continuous run across the boundary, which means clearing one half often achieves nothing.
- Moss shed off shaded valley-side roofs all year, on top of the autumn leaf fall
- Silt and debris that stay permanently wet in a damp valley, compacting into a mat that never dries and clears itself
- Overflow running down render and pebbledash, leaving a stain that survives long after the run is cleared
- Semi pairs sharing one continuous run over the boundary, so half a job is often no job at all
- Let properties where the owner may not see the problem until damp shows inside a back bedroom
Cleared by pole vacuum, with nothing resting on pebbledash
Everything is cleared from the ground with a pole-mounted vacuum, the only sensible option on rendered elevations, since a ladder foot against pebbledash does its own damage. We take out silt and moss as well as leaves, because on a damp run it is the compacted silt holding standing water. Downpipes and the rear gullies are then flushed so we know the full length actually drains. Where the render below has been stained, we photograph it so you can see how far the overflow reached.
- Pole vacuum from ground level, with no ladder leaning on render or pebbledash at any point
- Silt and moss lifted out of the run, beyond skimming leaves off the top, since silt is what holds the water on a damp run
- Downpipes and rear gullies flushed through to confirm the whole length is flowing
- Any staining on the render below photographed and reported, since a clear run is what stops it spreading
More detail on the equipment and the order of work: how we do gutter cleaning, step by step.
Valley-side roofs and what comes off them
The heaviest work is on the streets running down towards the Cole and the green swathes, where roofs are shaded, moss is thick and the gutters below them fill from the roof as much as from the sky. Further up towards the railway and the Outer Circle it behaves more conventionally and once a year is fine. Access across the ward is good, with drives and verges to set up on, so a semi pair can be done together in a single visit. Stechford gutter work is booked onto set days, so book ahead of the leaf fall. Autumn is the usual season, and on the valley side a second visit in late spring, once the winter moss has moved, is worth having.
Compacted silt, more than height, is what lengthens the job
A standard two-storey semi here is straightforward work at a sensible height, and the price reflects that. What changes it is compaction: a run holding several years of wet silt takes longer than one holding a season of leaves, and the downpipe may need rodding as well as flushing. Both halves of a semi pair share the run, so doing them on the same visit makes sense, and on these estate roads three or four neighbours can often book the same day. We do not carry out gutter repairs, so we have no reason to overstate what we find.
Twice a year near the Cole, once further up the ward
Twice a year on the shaded valley side of Stechford, once in late autumn after the leaf drop and once in late spring when the winter’s roof moss has washed down. Once a year is genuinely enough further up the ward towards the railway and the main road. If your rendered elevation has already been stained once, keep to the twice-yearly pattern for a couple of years, because the wall is the expensive part and the gutter visit is the cheap insurance against it.

Frequently asked questions
No. The dark tail down the wall is algae and dirt bonded to the render surface, and it stays exactly where it is once the water stops running over it. Clearing the run stops it getting worse. Taking the mark off the render is a separate job for a render specialist, and it is worth doing only once the gutter above is clear.
Shade and humidity. The Cole floodplain keeps the air damp and a north-facing roof pitch here gets very little drying sun, which is close to ideal for moss. It grows on the tiles, then rain washes it down into the gutter, which is why a gutter on this side of Stechford fills up in June as well as November while a house up the hill does not.
Yes, if they book it too. On a semi pair the gutter runs unbroken across the boundary and a blockage on their side will still overflow onto your wall, so both halves in one visit is the better job.
Often, yes. An overflowing run soaks the rendered wall directly beneath it and the wall then stays wet, which is exactly how damp appears inside. But not always. A cracked section, a failed joint or a length that has sagged off the fascia will not be fixed by cleaning, and we photograph what we find and tell you so, because we do not do the repairs.
Not on the valley side, though it is for most of the ward, with one visit once the leaves are down and before the winter rain. Near the Cole, autumn alone leaves you exposed, because the moss coming off the roof arrives on its own schedule. Those houses do better on a late-autumn clear plus a lighter visit in spring.
