Rubery Gutter Cleaning Where Moss and Roof Grit Fill the Run

What fills a Rubery gutter is mostly moss and grit shedding off the concrete tile roofs that came with the 1960s and 70s houses, plus whatever the wind carries across open ground from the Lickeys and the fields on the Bromsgrove side. There is less street canopy here than in the older suburbs, so the load arrives steadily through the year not in one October drop.

That mix behaves differently to leaf litter. Roof grit and moss settle into a dense silt in the bottom of the run rather than a loose plug at the outlet, so it drains slowly for years before it stops draining at all. Meanwhile this is an exposed hilltop site, and wind-driven rain overtops a half-blocked gutter sideways, not neatly off the front lip, which is why the staining shows up along the wall below the run instead of around the downpipe.

Moss, roof grit and wind-driven overtopping on the hill

The tell here is on the fascia, not on the ground. Many Rubery houses had their timber fascia and soffit replaced with uPVC from the 1980s onward, and much of that plastic has never been washed. Once a gutter starts overtopping, the water runs back under the lip and leaves vertical black streaks down white plastic, so the first sign of a blocked run is usually a tiger-striped fascia rather than a waterfall at the front door. On the windward elevation the same dampness feeds green algae on the render below. The conservatory gutter sits lower and fills faster than the main guttering, and it gets ignored entirely.

  • Moss and grit off concrete tile roofs settling as a dense silt bed along the run
  • Wind-blown debris across open ground below the Lickeys, arriving steadily all year instead of in a single autumn dump
  • Black streaking on decades-old uPVC fascias, which is the real early warning of an overtopping gutter
  • Wind-driven rain overtopping sideways and staining render along the length of the wall
  • Conservatory guttering set below the main run, blocking long before the house gutter does

Silt bed out, downpipes flushed, fascia streaks quoted

A pole-mounted vacuum works the whole run from ground level, and on a Rubery drive there is room to set up properly with nothing resting against your guttering, fascia or render. The silt and moss bed comes out along with the loose material, then the downpipes are flushed so we know the run flows end to end. A camera on the pole records the state of things: cracked sections, sagging, loose brackets and gaps between gutter and fascia are photographed and put in front of you. Where the fascia is streaked we quote a soft wash for the same visit, so you do not book twice.

  • Silt and moss bed lifted out, not merely the loose debris lying over it
  • Downpipes flushed and confirmed flowing, since a clear gutter above a blocked pipe still overtops
  • Fascia, soffit and cladding soft washed on the same trip where the plastic has streaked
  • Conservatory run cleared as well, because it fills sooner than the house guttering does

When Rubery gutters actually need doing

Late autumn is still the main window, but B45 gutters also want a look after the winter gales, when the exposure below the Lickeys pushes grit and moss along the run and lifts debris off open ground onto the roof. We cover the streets off New Road, the older part by St Chad’s and the higher roads on the Bromsgrove side, and a slot within the week is usually possible. You do not need to be in, though we do need the side gate open. Off-street parking makes this an easy job to arrange here.

Run length, height and the volume sitting in it

The length of the run, the height, and the volume sitting in it set the price. A standard Rubery semi with a front and rear run is quick if it was done last year. A detached house with a rear extension, a garage run and a conservatory gutter has considerably more guttering than the frontage suggests, and the quote reflects the metres of gutter, not the width of the frontage. A run left alone for five years, with rooted growth in the silt, costs more on the first visit than on the ones after. The fascia wash can go on the same visit.

Late autumn, or twice where the roof sheds moss heavily

Once a year covers most Rubery houses, booked for late autumn. Bring it to twice yearly where a roof sheds moss heavily onto a north- or west-facing run, or where a conservatory gutter sits under the house run and collects everything that comes off it. The fascia and soffit wash is a slower cycle, once a year or every other year, and it is worth pairing with the gutter visit so the whole line above your windows comes back to white together.

Frequently asked questions

Usually, yes. In Rubery the material is mostly moss and grit shedding off concrete roof tiles, plus wind-blown debris off the open ground below the Lickeys. That builds into a silt bed that holds water and slows the run for years before it blocks outright, and it will not clear itself the way loose leaves sometimes do.

Dirty water running back under the gutter lip, which is what happens when the run overtops or the gutter has pulled slightly away from the board. It is the most reliable sign of a gutter problem on a Rubery frontage, and it is why we look at the fascia from the ground while we are there and quote a wash for it.

No. Plastic guttering distorts under a ladder top and render marks under a ladder foot. The whole run is emptied by vacuum on a pole, worked off the drive, which on these plots is easy: there is space to work and no need to touch the building at all.

For a season, at best. We photograph it and give you a straight answer, and since we do not fit or repair guttering there is nothing to gain from talking you into a replacement. If a run is sagging between brackets or a joint has failed, you are better off knowing now.

Yes. The fascia and soffit wash goes on the same B45 visit as the gutter clear, priced as its own line, so the whole line above your windows comes back together.
