Shirley Gutter Clearing for Deep Plots Behind the Stratford Road

The gardens are the reason Shirley gutters fill across the year, not just in a two-week rush every November. The interwar and post-war stock here was laid out on deep, generous plots, and eighty or ninety years on those plots carry established trees at the front and the back. A well-treed 1930s garden does not drop everything inside a fortnight. It feeds the guttering from the first blossom and seed fall in spring right the way through to the last of the leaves in December.

A second source is the roof itself. Tiled roofs of that age carry moss on the shaded planes, and it sheds continuously into the run as a silt bed that leaf litter alone would never create. On the Stratford Road frontages there is a third, because road grit and greasy film off the A34 bind that silt into something heavier and more compacted than you find on a sheltered avenue behind. B90 falls under Solihull council rather than Birmingham, and we clear it on set days.

Extensions, porches and conservatory runs on a Shirley plot

A Shirley detached house carries a great deal more guttering than its frontage suggests. A rear extension, a garage, a porch and a conservatory each bring a run of their own, and the conservatory run, being the lowest on the property and sitting right beneath the branches, packs solid first and then tips water down the frame onto the patio. Meanwhile the main house run takes three things at once: leaf and seed off the mature plot, moss shedding from the older tiled roof planes, and on the A34 frontages a greasy road grit that binds loose debris into a compacted bed. Clear the leaves alone here and it is blocked again by midwinter.

  • Deep, well-established 1930s to 50s plots feeding the gutters from spring seed fall to late autumn
  • Moss shedding off shaded tiled roof planes and settling as a silt bed beneath the leaf litter
  • The conservatory run packing solid before anything else, lowest on the property and closest to the branches
  • Garages, porches and rear extensions adding run that the width of the frontage never hints at
  • Road grit and greasy film on Stratford Road frontages, packing the debris down so it never washes through

Pole vacuum from the ground, silt bed and all

The vacuum runs off a pole from ground level and reaches three storeys, which means no weight goes onto guttering, fascia, render or a conservatory frame at any point. Out comes the moss and silt bed along with the leaf litter, that bed being the reason a run refills so fast when somebody has only skimmed the top off it. Every downpipe is flushed afterwards to prove water genuinely gets away, the conservatory and garage runs included, since those are the ones most often ignored. The camera on the pole records what is up there: splits, sagging, brackets working loose, gaps opening between gutter and fascia.

  • Vacuum on a pole from the ground, with no weight put onto gutter, fascia or a conservatory frame
  • The moss and silt bed taken out too, not merely the leaves sitting on top of it
  • Conservatory, garage and porch runs cleared and flushed, never treated as somebody else’s problem
  • Photographs of cracked, sagging or pulled-away sections, so you see what we saw from up there

Why twice a year is normal here

On the tree-heavy plots behind the Stratford Road, two visits a year is the pattern worth booking: one after the canopy has finished coming down, another towards the end of spring when the blossom and seed have stopped falling. The properties backing onto the older gardens near Shirley Park collect a great deal. You do not have to be in for it. We do have to reach the back of the house, and gated side entries are usual on the detached stock, so leave the gate open or send a code and nobody wastes a journey.

Run length and what the trees drop: pricing a B90 clear

What you pay tracks the length of run, the height it sits at and how much is in it, and in Shirley the run tends to be longer than the frontage implies. A plain semi with a front and a back gutter is quick work. Put a rear extension, a garage, a porch and a conservatory onto a detached house and there are four or five separate runs to deal with, none of which shows in the width of the property. Five years of neglect with seedlings established in the channel costs more than a yearly clear, so expect a first visit to be dearer than the ones after it. Booked alongside the windows or the drive, the whole exterior goes on one appointment.

Late autumn and late spring under Shirley’s garden trees

Two visits a year suits the well-treed plots, which is the bulk of the older housing: one at the back end of autumn, one at the back end of spring. A single annual clear is fine on an open plot with nothing hanging over the roof, and on the newer development where the planting has not grown up yet. The conservatory run is the exception whatever the house is on, because it spills onto glass and paving where you will notice it long before the main gutter causes trouble.

Frequently asked questions

Not on a Shirley plot. Mature garden trees shed blossom, seed and small debris through spring and summer as well, and moss coming off the roof never stops at all. Late autumn remains the main clear, but on a well-treed plot a spring visit stops the run sitting full of compacted silt right through the summer.

Yes, and here it is frequently the more pressing of the two. Being the lowest run on the property and sitting almost under the branches, it packs solid ahead of everything else, then tips water onto the conservatory frame and whatever is standing beneath it. Doing the house and ignoring that one leaves the job half finished.

Neither. The whole thing is done from ground level with a vacuum on a pole, up to three storeys. Ladder tops bend guttering out of shape, and a ladder anywhere near a conservatory frame risks damage worth a great deal more than the clean. Working from below also gets us to runs above a conservatory that no ladder could safely reach.

Listen for a downpipe gurgling or backing up. Look for water coming over the front lip in heavy rain instead of running along to the outlet, green streaking down the fascia, and anything growing out of the channel. Seedlings that have taken root mean it has been full for years, not months.

Yes, and on a Shirley property it makes sense. B90 is covered on set days, and one appointment for glass, gutters, conservatory and drive means the whole outside is done in one go, with a single quote covering the lot.
