Gutter Cleaning for Cotteridge Semis, Back Runs Included
Gutter work here is almost entirely a rear elevation problem, which is worth knowing before you book. The streets themselves are not heavily treed, so front runs on most Cotteridge semis stay reasonably clear from one year to the next. The back is another matter. These houses have long rear gardens, and the trees planted near the house when the estates went up in the 1930s are now full grown and standing directly over the roof.
The hipped roof adds to it. A hipped 1930s semi carries gutter on three sides, and there is often a further short run over the side extension or the garage at the end of the drive. So the total length is greater than the frontage suggests, and the part that blocks is the part you cannot see from the pavement. Most people find out in December, from a downpipe that has started to gurgle.

Garden trees, hipped roofs and the rear outlet plug
What fills a Cotteridge rear gutter is direct drop from one or two specific trees, far more than leaf litter blowing about. That produces a dense wet plug rather than a light scatter, and it usually forms at the outlet where the run meets the downpipe. The hipped tile roof makes its own contribution: moss growing on the north-facing slope sheds continuously and settles as a silt bed underneath the leaves. And when a rear gutter on these houses overflows it pours straight down the rendered back wall, which then greens up. That stain is often the first sign anyone notices, usually in spring.
- One or two mature garden trees planted close to the house in the 1930s, now dropping straight into the rear run
- A dense wet plug forming at the rear outlet instead of a light scatter along the length
- Moss shedding off the north-facing slope of a hipped tile roof and settling as silt beneath the leaves
- More total run than the frontage suggests, once the hips, the side extension and the garage are counted
- Overflow soaking the rendered rear elevation, which greens up and shows from the garden
Pole vacuum from the side drive, downpipes flushed
Everything comes out through a vacuum head on a pole, worked from the drive, so no weight is ever put on the guttering, the fascia or the render. Where a house has a side drive, it gives us clear access to the back without going through the property, which is why nobody needs to be in. We take out the silt bed as well as the leaves, then flush the downpipes to prove the run flows, including the rear one that caused the problem in the first place. The garage and porch runs are done on the same visit, not quoted as extras.
- Worked from the ground with a pole vacuum, so nothing leans on the fascia or the rendered rear wall
- Access to the rear along a side drive or gate, which is why you do not need to be home
- Silt and moss lifted as well as leaves, or the run plugs again by January
- Garage and porch runs included, and every downpipe flushed to prove it actually drains

November, once the garden trees have dropped
A yearly November booking is the sensible arrangement here. The garden trees over the back of these houses drop within a fairly tight window, and clearing in September or early October just means doing it twice. We work the streets between Cotteridge Park and Watford Road, then the roads running down towards the canal and Kings Norton station, where the gardens are longest and the trees biggest. We ring ahead, do it, and send photographs of anything cracked or sagging.
What lengthens a Cotteridge gutter job
Length of run, height, and how much is sitting in it. A standard hipped semi with front and rear runs, a garage and a porch is a predictable job, and once we know the street we can usually quote it from the address. What moves the price is a rear extension adding a lower run, a three storey element, or a first clear after several neglected years, where rooted growth and a packed silt bed take considerably longer than an annual visit. Each semi has its own run, meeting next door’s at the party wall, and two adjoining houses can be booked for the same visit if that suits you both.
A yearly November slot, and when to add a spring clear
Once a year in November covers most houses here, and a standing booking means you need not think about it again. Twice yearly is worth it if a large tree overhangs the rear roof directly, with a second clear in late spring after the seed and blossom drop. If a downpipe is gurgling now, do not wait for autumn: water standing in a run gets into the fascia, and that becomes a repair.
Overall satisfied with service this company has provided leaving windows & guttering clean.

Frequently asked questions
Because that is where the trees are. Cotteridge streets are not especially treed, but the rear gardens are long and the trees planted near these houses in the 1930s are now mature and hanging over the roof. A front run on a typical semi here can go a couple of years. The back one cannot.
Yes. A regular booking can be set for the same week each year, and we ring you the week before. November is the right month because the garden trees have finished dropping but the sustained winter rain has not yet set in.
Yes. A side drive running down to a garage gets us to the rear elevation with the equipment. If the side gate is locked, leave it open on the day or give us the code. Houses without a side drive, such as the terraces, need a way through the back instead, which we arrange with you.
Yes, on the same visit, along with the porch if you have one. They are short runs and they block quickly because they sit low, and leaving them means water running down the side of the drive you have just paid to have cleaned.
Yes, we photograph it and tell you. Sagging between brackets, a split at the outlet and a gap opening up at the fascia are all common on runs that have been overflowing for years. Repairs are not something we take on, so we gain nothing at all by making a run sound worse than it is.
