Gutter Cleaning in Marston Green for Leafy Plots and Long Runs
Gutters in Marston Green block on bulk: leaf, twig, seed case, and the moss shed by a north-facing roof slope across a wet Solihull winter. Fine dust from the roads arrives too, but the first heavy rain carries it along the run and away down the pipe. It is the leaf and moss that sit, silt up and eventually overflow.
Bulk is something this village has plenty of. Plots here are generous for a village this close to the city, the older village streets carry mature trees, and the older gardens near the church have had decades to grow into them. Add the garage, porch and rear extension runs that come as standard on twentieth-century semis and detached houses, and there is more guttering up there than the frontage would ever suggest.

Leaf, moss and low eaves under mature village trees
The blockage itself is ordinary. What changes here is how much lands in it and how long it sits. A detached house on a wooded plot off Land Lane can take an entire autumn drop into a run that was clear in September. Moss is the quieter half of the problem: north-facing tiles hold it over winter and shed it steadily, and it beds down wet underneath the leaves where only a proper vacuum clear reaches it. Then there are the low runs. Garage gutters, porch canopies and conservatory eaves sit closer to the branches and pack out well before the main run does. The first symptom is usually something you hear before you see it.
- Mature trees along the older village streets and in the gardens near the church, dropping straight into the runs below
- Moss shed by north-facing tiles all winter, bedding down wet underneath the leaf litter
- Garage, porch and conservatory eaves sitting low and near the branches, so they pack out before the main run
- Extensions and rear additions carrying far more run length than a look at the frontage would suggest
- Silt beds that build up under the leaf and hold water against the joints of the run
Vacuumed from the drive, downpipes watched at the gully
A pole-mounted vacuum does the work at ground level and reaches a three-storey elevation, so nothing at all rests on the fascia, the render or a conservatory frame. The moss bed comes out with the loose leaf, since taking only what floats leaves a wet layer that re-silts before Christmas. Each downpipe is then run through and watched at the gully, because a gutter can be spotless above a pipe that is packed solid. A camera goes along the run while we work, and anything cracked, sagging or working away from the fascia is photographed for you.
- All of it vacuumed from the ground, so nothing stands on lawns, borders or block paving
- The moss bed taken out with the leaf, or the run beds up again long before spring
- Every downpipe run through and watched at the gully, not simply the gutter feeding it
- Anything cracked, sagging or working loose photographed and sent over, since we clear and do not repair

Late autumn in the village
The right window here is fairly tight, roughly the second half of November, once the trees in the older gardens and along Alcott Lane have finished dropping. Bookings are grouped on set days, starting from the station and the old centre, then the streets running towards Bickenhill and Chelmsley Lane. Properties backing onto open ground and the older wooded gardens fill fastest of all. Nobody needs to be in, although we do ask that the side gate is left unbolted, because almost every house here has a rear run and a garage to get past. Late November slots are limited, so book in October if you can.
Hidden run length on a detached B37 house
The number comes from run length, working height and the sheer volume sitting up there. Access helps on this stock: off-street parking outside nearly every property and open side entries mean we are working within minutes of pulling up, with no shared alley to negotiate. Against that, a detached house with a rear extension, a garage and a conservatory carries a great deal more guttering than a plain semi of the same frontage, so we price what is genuinely up there instead of measuring your frontage. Where a run has gone five or six years and seedlings have taken root in the silt bed, that opening visit is dearer than every annual one after it. Garage, porch and conservatory eaves are included in the figure, not added later.
The second half of November, and a spring visit under trees
Once a year for most of B37, booked for late November and not early October, so the drop has finished and one visit does the job properly. Twice a year is worth it where a house sits beneath mature trees or backs onto open ground, adding a late spring visit once the seed and blossom have finished. Garage and conservatory eaves reward the shorter interval whatever the main run is on. Anything already overflowing wants clearing now, not next season.

Frequently asked questions
No. Fine dust is light enough that rain moves it along the run and out through the pipe without help. Blockages are built from leaf, twig, seed and roof moss, which makes this a garden and a roof problem, and that is what we clear.
Never. The whole run is emptied by pole and vacuum with our boots on your drive, three storeys included. Nothing stands on lawns, borders or block paving either. It is faster as well, which keeps the visit short.
You will hear it before you see it. A gurgle or a backing-up sound at the downpipe comes first, then a dark splash line down the render and green staining across the fascia. Anything actually growing up there has been left several years, and the silt bed is now deep enough to root in.
Yes, and do point them out when you book. Both sit lower than the main run and generally nearer the branches, which is why they pack out first. A conservatory gutter tipping over the edge drops onto the frame and the panels beneath it, and that becomes a roof cleaning job you did not otherwise need.
Yes, if the timing suits the trees. The second half of November is the right moment for most B37 gutters, and the windows can be booked for the same set day. We clear the runs first, then clean the glass, so nothing from the gutter ends up on freshly cleaned windows.
