Gutter Cleaning for Great Barr’s Hipped-Roof Semis

The hipped roof is the detail that makes gutter work in Great Barr different from a terrace or a gable-ended house. A 1930s semi with a hipped roofline carries guttering along the front, the back and the side, so the run you are paying to clear is a good deal longer than the frontage suggests. Add the detached garage, which has a short run and a downpipe of its own, and there is more up there than most people expect.

Then there is the conservatory. Many semis here have one on the back, and it has a small gutter of its own sitting lower than the house run and directly under whatever the roof panels shed. It fills with moss off the polycarbonate, and when it overflows the water goes down the frame and into the junction with the render, towards the building instead of away from it. We clear both runs on the same visit as a matter of course.

Leaf from the parks, grit from the A34 and the M6

Two loads go into a Great Barr gutter. The first is organic: moss shedding off tile and off conservatory panels, plus leaves from the mature planting around Red House Park, the Great Barr Hall grounds and the golf course. That settles into a silt bed, so a run cleared of leaves alone is blocked again by midwinter. The second is road grit. Houses along the A34 and near the M6 approach collect a fine, heavy sediment that ordinary rain will not shift, and it packs down at the low end of the run and around the outlet. Neither announces itself until the first sustained wet spell.

  • Hipped rooflines with gutter on three elevations, so the run is longer than the house is wide
  • A separate conservatory gutter sitting low and directly under the panels, filling with shed moss
  • Detached garages with a short run and outlet of their own, forgotten in most quotes
  • Road grit and sediment off the A34 and the M6 approach, packing down around the outlets
  • Leaf load from Red House Park, the Great Barr Hall grounds and the golf course on that side

Pole vacuum set up on the drive, downpipes flushed

A pole-mounted vacuum does the whole job from ground level, which on generous plots with on-plot parking is quick to set up and means nothing touches your fascia, render or conservatory frame. We take out the silt and moss bed as well as the loose leaves, then flush the downpipes so we know the run genuinely flows. The conservatory gutter and the garage run are done at the same visit. A camera goes up while we are there, and you get photographs of anything cracked, sagging or pulling away from the fascia.

  • Pole vacuum worked off the drive, with nothing leaning on render, pebbledash or a conservatory frame
  • Silt, moss and road sediment removed, not only the leaf litter sitting on top of it
  • Conservatory gutter and detached garage run cleared on the same visit as the house
  • Downpipes flushed and the whole run photographed, so you see the condition for yourself

More detail on the equipment and the order of work: gutter cleaning across Birmingham.

Late autumn across Great Barr

Late autumn is the season here, and Great Barr gutter work is booked onto set days through October and November, so book ahead. The heaviest properties are on the Red House Park and Great Barr Hall side, where the mature trees are. The A34 and Scott Arms side is lighter on leaves and heavier on grit. Nobody needs to be home, though we do need side access to reach the rear and the conservatory run, which on these plots is usually a gate beside the garage.

Why a hipped roof means more gutter to clear

Length of run, height, and how much is sitting in it. The hipped roofline is why a Great Barr semi is rarely priced like a terrace of the same width: there is simply more gutter to clear. Adding the conservatory run and the garage costs less done together than calling us back later, which is why we quote the three as one job. A run untouched for five years, with rooted seedlings and a packed silt bed, takes longer than an annual clear, so a first visit usually costs more than the ones that follow it. Neighbouring semis sharing a run are best done as a pair.

Late autumn, once the leaves are really down

Once a year for most of the suburb, booked for late autumn once the leaves are actually down rather than in September while they are still on the tree. Twice a year is worth it on the Red House Park and Great Barr Hall side under mature trees, and worth it for the conservatory gutter almost anywhere here, because it is small and fills long before the house run does. If you already have visible overflow, do not wait for the season.

Frequently asked questions

The hipped roof. A hipped roofline carries guttering round three sides of a semi rather than just front and back, so there is considerably more run to clear than the frontage suggests. We price the run, not the width of the house.

Yes, and on these houses it matters more than the main run. It sits lower, directly under the roof panels, and fills with the moss they shed. When it overflows the water runs down the frame and into the joint with the render, which turns a cleaning job into a damp one.

No. We work from the ground with a pole-mounted vacuum, which reaches comfortably on a two-storey semi. Ladder feet mark pebbledash and render, and a ladder top pulls plastic guttering out of line. On a house with a drive to set up on there is no reason to lean anything against it.

Yes, on the nearest streets. What comes off the A34 and the Junction 7 approach is a fine heavy grit, not leaf litter, and it settles at the low end of the run and around the outlet where rain cannot move it. Houses out towards Red House Park get more leaves and much less of that.

No council clears private guttering anywhere, whichever of the three Great Barr sits in. It is the homeowner’s responsibility. For us B42, B43 and B44 are one area, whichever council you pay.
