Hall Green Gutter Cleaning Under Avenue and Garden Trees

Hall Green gutters get it from both sides. The avenues were planted when the houses went up, so there are mature street trees standing over the front elevation, and the long back gardens have had ninety years to grow their own: apple, birch, sycamore, and often a neighbour’s conifer hedge along a boundary. The front run and the back run fill on different timetables from different trees, and both of them fill.

That is why we recommend twice a year in B28. Spring here brings blossom, seed and the sycamore drop before the leaves have even started, so a run cleared in November can be visibly loaded again by May. We work the whole postcode from the ground with a pole vacuum, which matters particularly on these houses because of what sits directly underneath the rear gutter.

Street trees in front, garden trees behind, a conservatory beneath

On many Hall Green houses a conservatory sits underneath the rear gutter, and that changes the consequences of a blockage completely. Without one, an overflowing gutter just runs down a wall. Here it sheets straight onto a glazed roof and off the front edge, washing gutter silt across the panels every time it rains, which is a large part of why B28 conservatory roofs green up so fast. The conservatory has its own gutter as well, lower down and further under the branches, and that one blocks first. Sort the house run and ignore it and you have solved half the problem.

  • Mature avenue trees standing over the front elevation and ninety years of garden growth over the back
  • Rear overflow landing on the conservatory roof, washing silt down the panels with every shower
  • A second, lower conservatory gutter sitting deeper under the branches, which blocks before the house run does
  • A spring load of blossom, seed and sycamore drop arriving on top of the autumn leaf fall
  • Long plots with a narrow side entry, so the pole and vacuum hose go down the side to reach the back run

Front and back runs from the ground, conservatory gutter included

A pole-mounted vacuum clears the whole run from ground level, front and back, with nothing resting against fascia, uPVC guttering or a conservatory frame. We take out the silt and moss bed as well as the leaves, because a run stripped of leaf alone is blocked again by January. Downpipes are flushed so we know the run genuinely flows and does not merely look clear. The conservatory gutter is done on the same visit as the house, since clearing one and leaving the other only relocates the overflow. Camera footage of cracks, sags and loose brackets comes to you.

  • Front and rear runs both cleared from ground level, with nothing leaning against a conservatory frame
  • Silt and moss bed lifted out, not simply the leaf sitting on top of it
  • House gutter and conservatory gutter done together, because doing one alone just moves where the water goes wrong
  • Downpipes flushed and the run photographed, with cracks and sagging shown to you rather than mentioned in passing

More detail on the equipment and the order of work: how we do gutter cleaning, step by step.

Twice a year, and why we mean it

Late October into November is the heavy period, and the whole of B28 wants it inside the same three weeks, so booking ahead is worth doing. The second clear falls in late May or early June, once the blossom and seed have finished coming down. Houses backing onto the Cole valley and the Shire Country Park, and those on the avenues with the largest street trees, collect the most by a distance. Nobody needs to be in, though we do ask that the side gate is unlocked, because on these plots the back run is the one that matters.

Three or four runs on one semi: what the B28 quote covers

Run length and access set the price, and Hall Green houses carry more run than the frontage implies. A 1930s semi with a rear extension and a conservatory has three or four separate lengths of guttering at different heights, not one at the front and one at the back. That is what the quote covers, so the figure will not track the width of the frontage. A run untouched for years, with seedlings actually rooted in the silt, takes longer on the first visit than on any afterwards. Where a pair of semis share a continuous front run, both halves can be cleared on the same visit.

Late autumn and late spring, because the trees fill both halves

Twice a year suits most of B28, since a single clear leaves the second half of the year to overflow. Late autumn is the essential one, once the avenue trees are properly bare. Late spring is the one people skip and should not, because blossom and seed pack down into a mat that holds water right through the summer. A house with no real tree cover, which is rare here, manages perfectly well on one.

Frequently asked questions

For most, yes. A run cleared in November can be visibly loaded again by the following May, because the front gets street tree fall and the back gets garden fall on a completely different schedule. If your plot really has nothing near it, we will tell you that once a year is enough.

Yes, on the same visit, and in B28 it is arguably the more important of the two. It sits lower, further under the branches, and it blocks before the house run does. Clearing the house gutter and leaving that one simply moves where the water ends up going.

Very likely, yes. On a Hall Green house a blocked rear gutter usually shows on the conservatory before it shows on the wall: silt streaking down the roof panels, a stripe of green where the water lands, and a drumming noise off the glass in heavy rain. Those are rear gutter symptoms before they are conservatory ones.

Yes, and on these long plots the side entry is often narrow, so an unlocked gate saves us both time. You do not need to be at home for it. If the only way through is via the house, tell us when you book and we will arrange a time that suits you.

We photograph it and show you. Ninety-year-old houses on the avenues often had uPVC guttering fitted in the 1980s, and it is brittle at the joints now, which shows as a persistent drip from one union more than a full overflow. We do not carry out gutter repairs, so there is nothing in it for us to overstate.
