Stourbridge Gutter Cleaning Under the Oldswinford and Pedmore Canopy

Gutters matter more in Stourbridge than most exterior jobs. The tree cover through Oldswinford, Norton and Pedmore is mature and genuinely heavy, and the houses sitting under it are big: long runs front and back, a rear extension with a run of its own, a bay roof, valleys between roof planes, and usually a conservatory below the lot. That is a great deal of catchment for one autumn, and it fills every single year.

We clear all of it from the ground with a pole-mounted vacuum that reaches up to three storeys, leaving fascia, stone and original cast iron untouched. Timing matters more in this town than it does in the city: under trees like these the leaves are not properly down until late November and sometimes into December, and clearing in September means paying for the job twice. We cover DY8 and DY9 on scheduled days, so booking ahead, ideally by half term, is the way to get a late autumn date.

Long runs and leaf-filled valleys under a heavy canopy

Volume is what makes this different. A large detached house in Norton has three or four times the run of a terrace, plus valleys that collect and hold leaf litter rather than shedding it downhill. Roof moss adds to the load, because damp and shade at the edge of the green belt keep moss alive on tile, and it sheds into the run as a silt bed that holds water long after the leaves have rotted away. Overflow then lands somewhere you cannot see it, onto a flat extension roof, behind a conservatory or down a side passage, so the first sign is a stained fascia or a damp patch indoors.

  • Beech, lime and sycamore over the residential streets, filling runs to capacity every autumn
  • Long runs, bay roofs, rear extensions and valleys that trap litter and hold it
  • Roof moss shedding into the run as a silt bed, kept alive by green belt shade and damp
  • Overflow hidden behind conservatories, down side passages and onto flat extension roofs
  • Old brick, stone and lime mortar in the conservation areas, which rules a ladder out entirely

Vacuum, valleys and flushed downpipes, all from the ground

The pole vacuum takes out leaves, moss silt and any rooted growth, and then downpipes are flushed so we know the whole run is moving, not only the visible part. Valleys are checked and cleared with the same head, because a clean gutter fed by a packed valley blocks again within weeks. The conservatory gutter, sitting lower and directly under the branches, is done at the same time as standard. We film the run as we work and send photographs of cracked sections, sagging, loose brackets or gaps at the fascia, and we tell you when something needs a repair, not a clean.

  • Pole-mounted vacuum from ground level, so nothing leans on stone, lime mortar or original cast iron
  • Valleys cleared as well as the runs, since a packed valley reblocks a clean gutter within weeks
  • Downpipes flushed through, and the conservatory gutter cleared on the same visit
  • Photographs of cracked, sagging or failing sections, with no repair work sold off the back of them

The Stourbridge autumn run

Late November and early December is when this happens, and the whole of DY8 and DY9 wants it inside the same three weeks. We block out set days for the town and work streets together, taking in Oldswinford, Norton, Pedmore, Wollaston and the older housing off the town centre and out towards Amblecote. Properties backing onto woodland, the Mary Stevens Park side, and the green belt edge towards the Clent Hills collect the most and are worth booking earliest. Nobody needs to be home, but we do need rear access, and on most of these houses that means a gate code or an unlocked side gate.

Run length, extensions and valleys on a big DY8 roof

Price follows the length of the run, the height and what is sitting in it, which is why the width of a frontage tells you almost nothing about these houses. A detached property with a rear extension, a bay roof, two valleys and a conservatory has far more run than the front elevation suggests. A first clear after five neglected years, with rooted seedlings and a compacted silt bed, takes longer than the annual visits that follow it. Adding the conservatory roof and the windows to the same visit saves two separate set-ups.

Every year after the last leaf, booked early

Annually, and in Stourbridge we mean that literally. Under trees like these the run is full by the end of every autumn, and the properties that can stretch to two years are the rare ones with nothing overhanging them. Houses directly beneath limes, sycamores or beech want a second clear in late spring, after the blossom and seed drop. Book the autumn visit in September even though the work itself happens in late November.

Frequently asked questions

Book in September, have it done in late November or early December. Under the trees around Oldswinford, Norton and Pedmore the leaves are not properly down before then, and clearing early means paying for it twice. We cover DY8 and DY9 on scheduled days, so booking ahead gets you the late autumn date you want.

Yes, and on these roofs it matters. A big house here has valleys between roof planes that pack with litter and then feed straight back into the gutter you have just had cleared. Doing the run and leaving the valley means it blocks again within weeks.

From the ground, with a pole-mounted vacuum head, which is the only method we use anywhere. Nothing rests against old brick, stone, lime mortar or original cast iron, and nobody walks on the roof. That is a Dudley conservation area consideration on plenty of properties around Oldswinford and Amblecote, and it is our standard practice regardless.

Yes, and it is included in the price. It hangs below the main run and takes the direct drop off the branches, so it packs out ahead of the house gutters and spills over the frame onto whatever sits underneath. Clearing the house and leaving it would be half a job.

Under mature trees in this town, yes. A run left through two winters holds a compacted silt bed rather than loose leaves, and getting that out takes longer and costs more than two annual visits would have. The properties that can stretch are the ones with nothing above them, and there are not many of those.
