Sutton Coldfield Gutter Cleaning Beside Sutton Park
Gutters are where the tree cover in Sutton Coldfield shows most. Sutton Park and the mature planting on these established plots put an exceptional volume of leaf litter on the roofs. It rots down into a bed of silt, moss washes into it off the tiles, and by the second or third year there are seedlings rooted in the run. Sycamore and birch seedlings are the usual culprits.
The runs are long and high as well. A large Four Oaks or Little Aston house can carry more guttering at three storeys than three ordinary semis put together, discharging into downpipes that run to gullies and soakaways well away from the wall. When a run like that overflows it is not a nuisance, it soaks render and brickwork continuously through a wet winter. We clear it from the ground, we flush the pipes, and we tell you what we found up there.

Park leaf, long runs and height on B74 plots
Three things make Sutton gutters hard work. The tree cover is the first: plots backing onto Sutton Park or carrying mature planting of their own shed leaf in a volume that fills a gutter in a single autumn. The second is what happens next, because rotted leaf becomes silt, silt holds standing water, moss arrives off the roof slope and seed germinates in it, so a neglected Sutton run has plants growing out of it, well past loose debris. The third is height. Long three-storey runs above planted borders mean nobody in the house can see the problem, let alone safely check it.
- Plots backing onto Sutton Park and heavily planted gardens at Four Oaks and Mere Green, and at Streetly and Little Aston over the boundary, shedding a heavy volume of leaf
- Seedlings properly rooted into a bed of silt, well beyond loose leaves in the run
- Moss washing down off large tile roofs into gutters that are already holding standing water
- Long three-storey runs above planted borders, where nobody in the house can safely look into them
- Overflow on a house this size soaking render and brickwork right the way through a wet winter
Silt, seedlings and moss lifted from the ground
A pole-mounted vacuum worked from ground level, reaching three storeys, with a camera on the pole so you can see the run before and after for yourself. We take out the silt bed as well as the leaves, because leaving the silt means the seedlings come straight back and the water still stands. Rooted growth is drawn out roots and all, never snapped off at the top. Then every downpipe is flushed through to its gully or soakaway, since a clear gutter feeding a blocked pipe still overflows down a Sutton gable.
- Vacuumed from the ground with nothing leaned on guttering, render, or a conservatory roof sitting beneath the run
- The silt bed removed and not just the leaves, because silt is what the seedlings are rooted into
- Every downpipe flushed to its gully or soakaway, which on a large plot can be some distance from the house
- Cracks, sagging sections and failed joints photographed and shown to you, because we do not carry out gutter repairs

Why gutters near Sutton Park fill so fast
The heaviest work is in B74 and B75, on the plots around Four Oaks and Mere Green, at Streetly and Little Aston just over the Walsall and Lichfield boundaries, and anywhere backing onto Sutton Park, and the blockages there are on a different scale from a typical suburban run. The Boldmere and town centre stock is far more ordinary: shorter runs, lower elevations, a normal autumn leaf problem. Access on the big plots takes a thought or two, with borders planted up to the wall, gravel underfoot and conservatory glazing sitting below the gutter line. None of that stops us working from the ground, but we would rather see it before quoting.
Length, height and load all push a Sutton run up
Price follows the length of run, the height and what is actually sitting in it, and in Sutton all three tend to work against you. A three-storey house at Little Aston with fifty metres of guttering is several times the job of a Boldmere semi, and that is before anyone raises the question of rooted growth. A run holding seedlings and a compacted silt bed takes longer than a run with one season of leaves in it, and its downpipes are more likely to need rodding than a simple flush. Sutton gutter clears go on set days, so book ahead of the autumn.
Twice a year near the park, once on more open streets
Twice a year for anything near Sutton Park or on a mature plot, because the trees drop enough to justify it. Late autumn once the leaves are down is the essential visit, and a spring one clears the seed, blossom and moss that arrive after it. Houses in the more open parts of Boldmere and Wylde Green with nothing overhanging can usually manage a single annual clear. If a run already has plants growing out of it, the first visit is the big one and the schedule starts afterwards.

Frequently asked questions
Yes. Near the park it is a common sight. Sycamore and birch seedlings root into the silt bed that forms as leaf litter rots down, so we lift the roots and the silt together. Snapping the tops off achieves nothing at all, because they simply regrow from the same bed within a season and you are back where you started.
Yes, near Sutton Park or under mature planting. Late autumn is not negotiable, because that is when the volume arrives. Spring catches the seed, blossom and moss that follow. In the more open streets around Boldmere, once a year is enough.
A pole-mounted vacuum working from ground level, which reaches three storeys comfortably. On a Sutton plot it is often the only option as well as the safer one, because the ground under the gable is a planted border and there is nowhere to foot a ladder anyway. Nothing leans on your guttering, your render or the conservatory below it.
Frequently yes, because an overflowing run soaks the wall directly beneath it and on a house this size that carries on all winter. But not always. If the section is cracked, a joint has failed or the run has sagged off the fascia, clearing it will not solve anything. We photograph what we find and show you. We do not do gutter repairs, so there is nothing in it for us to exaggerate.
Once the leaves are down, usually late November, and a few weeks ahead, because Sutton bookings go on set days. Booking early secures a date before the winter rain sets in.
