Deep Cleaning a Weoley Castle 1930s Semi, Top to Bottom
Outside, the Weoley Castle estate repeats the same house down every street. Inside, forty years of different kitchen and bathroom refits do not. A house still on a council tenancy can carry newer fittings than the right-to-buy semi next door that has not been refitted in decades, so the same building can be two completely different deep cleans.
What does not vary is the water. Birmingham drinks soft Elan Valley water piped in from mid Wales, so nothing in a Weoley Castle bathroom is furred with scale. What you get instead is soap scum on the bath and the screen, black mould worked into grout and sealant, and a greasy film across a small rear kitchen where the cooker sits under a recirculating hood. Those three things are most of the job here.

A small rear kitchen, a shower over the bath and forty years of refits
The original 1930s plan is what creates the work. The kitchen is a small room at the back with one window, and where a shower has been fitted over the bath in the equally small bathroom directly above it, both rooms carry far more moisture than they were designed to shift. Extractor hoods added later on this estate usually recirculate through a charcoal filter and never vent through the wall, so cooking grease settles back across the whole room and stays there. Add the deep skirting runs, the inside of the front bay with its sill and reveals, and a stair cupboard nobody empties, and a fortnightly clean leaves a great deal standing.
- Small rear kitchens with a single window, where a recirculating hood pushes grease straight back into the room
- The original upstairs bathroom over the kitchen, now with a shower over the bath and almost no useful ventilation
- Mould in grout and sealant and no limescale, because the estate is on soft Elan Valley water
- Front bay sills and reveals, plus the deep skirting runs that repeat through every room of this house type
- Kitchen and bathroom fittings of wildly different ages in identical houses, depending on who refitted and when
Top down and dry first, then the hood filter and the grout
We work top down and dry before wet, so every room is dusted from the ceiling down before a cloth is wrung out. The kitchen takes the longest share: oven interior and door glass, hob, and the hood filter taken out and degreased, because a recirculating filter is usually the dirtiest single object in a Weoley Castle kitchen. Grout and sealant get a mould treatment with real dwell time, not a hard scrub that only lightens it. The bay, its sill, the reveals and the stair cupboard are finished by hand at the end.
- The recirculating hood filter removed and degreased, not simply wiped over on the outside
- Mould treatment left to dwell on grout and sealant, which is what soft water actually leaves behind here
- Dry work first in every room, from the top down, including the bay reveals and the skirting runs
- A fixed price agreed from photographs, because the room sizes repeat right across the estate
More detail on the equipment and the order of work: how we do deep cleaning, step by step.
Inside a Corporation semi
A Weoley Castle deep clean usually follows one of three situations: an owner clearing a house that has been in the family since right to buy, a private landlord resetting an ex-council semi between lets, or a household getting the place straight before a christening, a funeral or Christmas. We are ten minutes away in the same B29 district, so we can start at eight and still finish inside the day, and the wide estate roads mean the van parks outside instead of two streets off with the kit carried in. If you rent from the council, an interior deep clean is entirely yours to arrange.
One standard semi, priced on the state it is in
The three-bedroom Corporation semi follows the same plan on nearly every street, with the same room count and the same stair, so we price on condition, with no measuring up. What moves the number is the state of the oven, whether the hood filter has ever been changed, how far mould has gone into the bathroom sealant, and whether a rear extension or a converted boxroom has added rooms to the original plan. Send photographs of the kitchen and the bathroom on WhatsApp and you get a fixed figure, not a rate per hour.
Spring and before Christmas, twice with a shower over the bath
Once or twice a year suits most households here, usually spring and again before Christmas. Move to twice a year if you have a shower over the bath in the original upstairs bathroom, because that room regrows mould in the sealant faster than the rest of the house gets dirty. Where an ex-council semi is changing hands or changing tenants, a single deep clean at the changeover is the whole of it.

Frequently asked questions
Yes. Hoods added later on this estate usually recirculate through a charcoal filter, so cooking grease settles back across the whole room, from the cupboard tops to the ceiling above the hob, and a deep clean covers all of it. If we find something that needs repairing, a dead extractor fan, a rotten window bottom, sealant round the bath that is past treating and needs renewing, we will tell you to report it and will not charge you to work around it.
Because the estate is on soft water. Birmingham is supplied from the Elan Valley, so there is almost nothing in it to leave a crust on the screen or fur up a shower head. The black in the joints is mould, growing in grout and sealant where a shower was added over the bath in the original small, poorly ventilated bathroom, and the grey film on the bath and screen is soap scum. Descaler is the wrong product for both.
On this estate, usually yes. The Corporation semis repeat so exactly that we already know the room sizes, the stair and the kitchen, so the only thing we are missing is condition. Photographs of the oven, the hood, the bathroom and any extension are enough for a fixed price.
Rarely past one. A standard house on the estate takes five to seven hours, and an extension adding a second reception room, or an oven untouched in years, takes it closer to a full day. Because we are ten minutes up the road inside B29, we can start at 8am and lose none of your booking to the drive.
Yes if you want them, and it is worth asking. The small larder off the kitchen and the cupboard under the stairs are standard in this house type, and between them they usually hold the freezer, the vacuum and thirty years of tins. They need emptying before we arrive. Say so when you book and we will allow the time instead of shutting the door on them.
