Conservatory Roof Cleaning in Sheldon for Shallow Lean-Tos
Conservatories are part of the Sheldon streetscape. Rear additions went onto these 1930s semis right through the 1990s and 2000s, on plots deep enough to take them, and many are still there at twenty to thirty years old with the original polycarbonate roof.
There is a design detail that makes these roofs worse than average. A lean-to added against the rear wall of a 1930s semi has a shallow pitch, because the wall plate has to duck under the first-floor window. A shallow roof does not shed. Leaf, moss, sap and bird mess sit on it and work into the joints between panels and the end caps, rather than washing off in the next downpour the way a steeper glass roof largely does.

Sap and leaf on shallow lean-tos along the park boundary
What loads a Sheldon conservatory roof depends almost entirely on how close it is to the tree line. Along the Sheldon Country Park and Old Rectory Farm boundary the input is relentless and organic: sap in summer, leaf and twig in autumn, moss shed off the tiles above, and a genuinely heavy amount of bird mess from the park’s own population. That builds into a green film with a tacky tannin layer set over the top, which is a harder thing to shift than algae alone. Underneath it, the conservatory guttering sits lower than the house run and directly under whatever is overhanging, so it blocks first, overflows onto the frame and the patio below, and keeps the whole structure damp.
- Shallow lean-to pitches ducking under the first-floor window, so debris settles instead of washing off the panels
- Sap, leaf, moss and heavy bird mess on the plots backing onto Sheldon Country Park and the Old Rectory Farm meadows
- Twenty to thirty year old polycarbonate whose panel joints and end caps fill with moss and hold water
- Conservatory guttering sitting below the house run and under the overhang, blocking well before the main gutters do
- Roofs nobody has looked at, because you only notice from inside once the light in the room has visibly gone
Low pressure and dwell time on the green and the tannin
Low pressure throughout, on polycarbonate and glass alike. The solution goes on, is given time to break down the green film and the tannin layer set over it, then comes off with a pure water rinse that dries clear. High pressure would scratch polycarbonate, drive water past seals that are already two decades old and split ageing glazing bars, and on a shallow-pitched lean-to there is nowhere for forced water to go except into the joints. Frames, bars, finials and end caps are done by hand, and the conservatory gutter is cleared and flushed as part of the job. Everything is reached from the ground in the garden, with the pole, so nothing rests on the frame itself.
- Low-pressure soft-wash with real dwell time, because the tannin layer over the green needs longer than algae alone
- A second application quoted openly where a roof has gone unwashed for a decade, never sprung on you on the day
- Frames, glazing bars, finials and polycarbonate end caps cleaned by hand, with anything perished reported not patched
- The conservatory gutter cleared and flushed as standard, since it blocks long before the house run does

Park boundary against the estate interior
Where your conservatory sits in Sheldon decides how often it needs us, and the boundary is the tree line rather than the postcode. Backing onto the country park or the Old Rectory Farm meadows means an annual clean, and the roofs there come back visibly green inside a year. In the middle of the estate, towards St Giles’ Church and the Coventry Road, the load is lighter and the interval stretches. Spring is the natural season, so the room is light going into summer, and Sheldon is covered on set days, so booking ahead is the way to get it. Pairing it with the gutters and the drive on the same booked day is the sensible way to buy it.
A regularly cleaned lean-to against one left since it was built
Size, roof material and how many years it has been left set the price. A regularly done lean-to on a standard semi is quick. A wide one on a park-boundary plot, untouched since the day it was built, is a far longer job and often wants the solution putting on twice, which is why we ask for photographs before naming a figure. Shallow panels on the park edge can also carry bird marks that have sat for years, and some older sheets are sun-damaged inside the plastic; the marks usually lift with a longer dwell, the sun damage does not, and the quote says which you have.
Yearly along the park edge, less often deeper in the estate
Once a year along the Sheldon Country Park and Old Rectory Farm edge, which is a real annual need here, because a year of sap, leaf and bird mess on a shallow pitch is plainly visible from inside the room. Every eighteen months to two years is enough in the middle of the estate with an open rear garden and no overhanging tree. The gutter is the exception either way and is better cleared annually.

Frequently asked questions
Two reasons stacked together. There is far more organic material landing on them, sap, leaf, moss and a lot of bird mess off the park, and the lean-to pitch on a 1930s semi is shallow enough that none of it washes away. On a steep glass roof away from trees, rain does a good deal of the work for you.
Mostly, yes. Bird mess off the park is acidic, and left on a shallow roof for years it stains, so it gets a longer dwell and sometimes a second application. What stays is any mark where the sheet itself has been damaged, and on an old polycarbonate roof a sun-tinted panel stays tinted. We tell you at the quote which marks will go.
Yes, always, and it is the part that most needs it. It sits below the main house run and usually right under whatever is overhanging the garden, so in B26 it blocks first and then spills onto the frame and the patio underneath. Cleaning the roof and leaving that would be half a job.
Nothing at all. We work from the garden with a pole and reach the ridge from ground level. A twenty-five-year-old frame with original seals is not something to rest a ladder against, and that is exactly how leaks start on a conservatory of this age.
Yes, almost certainly. A decade of growth comes off with soft-washing and the light comes back into the room, which in these houses can mean a conservatory nobody was using becomes a room again. We will quote for a second application upfront if the roof needs one.
