Carpet Cleaning Moseley Stairs, Landings and Shared Stairwells
A great deal of Moseley lives on stripped and varnished boards with rugs laid over them, because that is what the period stock came with and what many owners here want back. So carpet cleaning in B13 centres on the stairs, the landings, the rugs and the communal stairwells, with fitted lounges in the family houses towards Wake Green Road.
What Moseley does have is stairs, and a great many of them. A three-storey house runs two flights and two landings, usually carpeted even where the rooms are not, and that strip absorbs every journey anybody in the building makes. In a converted house the same stairwell carries four households and everybody delivering to them. Add the mud and wet leaf mulch that comes back off the Bog on boots and dogs, and that is the shape of the work here.

Wet mud and leaf tannin from the Bog and the park
What lands in a Moseley carpet is different from what lands in one beside a main road. This is not dry pavement grit so much as wet organic soil: mud, leaf mould and tannin walked in from the Bog, from Moseley Park and off the Village green after rain, which stains as it dries instead of sitting loose in the pile waiting to be vacuumed. It funnels onto two flights in a tall house, or onto one communal stairwell shared by four flats. Meanwhile the rooms either side are frequently bare boards, so the carpet that does exist takes a share of the household traffic wildly out of proportion to its area.
- Two flights of stairs and two landings in a three-storey house, carrying every journey anybody makes
- Communal stairwell carpet in converted houses, used by four households and looked after by none of them
- Wet mud and leaf mould walked back off Moseley Bog and the parks, which stains as it dries and will not simply vacuum out
- Rugs laid over stripped boards, which need cleaning off the floor rather than on it
- Fitted lounge carpet in the family houses towards Wake Green Road and Billesley Lane, on an annual reset
Longer dwell for tannin, a hand tool on the turning stair
Dry vacuuming first and thoroughly, though the balance is different here: much of what is in a Moseley stair carpet is dried mud and leaf tannin, with little loose grit, so the pre-spray and its dwell time do more of the work than usual. Stains are each treated on their own first. Stairs are done with a hand tool, not a dragged wand, which matters on a Victorian flight that turns at a half landing and then does it again. Rugs come off the boards and are cleaned separately, so nothing wet is left standing on a varnished floor.
- Hand tool on the stairs, worked flight by flight around two half landings
- Longer pre-spray dwell on dried mud and leaf tannin, which does not release the way dry grit does
- Rugs lifted off varnished boards and cleaned separately, so no water sits on the floor beneath them
- Colour-fastness tested first, which genuinely matters on a contract stairwell carpet in a converted house

Stairs, stairwells and what comes back off the Bog
The domestic work is spread through the whole houses off Wake Green Road, Chantry Road and Billesley Lane, most often stairs, landing and a lounge together, and January is the natural time, once people look properly at what the autumn did. The communal work sits nearer the Village, on the converted streets around Church Road and Salisbury Road, and it is arranged by a managing agent or by whichever leaseholder finally got tired of looking at it. Both are winter jobs here, once the wet months have been walked in.
Flights and floors in a three-storey B13 house
Priced by room and by flight, with a minimum charge, because setting up takes the same time whether we clean one flight or a whole floor. In a three-storey house that pushes people towards doing both flights, both landings and the lounge in one visit, which is the sensible combination anyway. Heavy staining and individual stain treatment add time. A communal stairwell is quoted per building and billed to the freeholder or managing agent, who normally recovers it through the service charge. Where a stair carpet is worn through on the nosings and not merely dirty, we say so before you pay.
Yearly with a dog walked in the Bog, longer without one
Twelve to eighteen months for a family house in B13, dropping to annually where there is a dog being walked in the Bog most days, which describes a fair number of them. A communal stairwell wants doing every year and unmistakably looks it if you leave it two. Rugs over boards can go longer, since they get shaken, turned and moved in a way a fitted carpet never is. Winter, once the wet months have done their worst, is more useful here than spring.
The carpets looks clean and beautiful, very professional and polite. I would recommend this company

Frequently asked questions
The stairs, the landings and the rugs, usually. Two flights of stairs, two landings and a couple of rugs is a proper visit and it suits the way Moseley houses are floored. There is a minimum charge, so one small rug on its own is not worth your money, and we point that out before taking the booking.
The freeholder, in most leases, generally through a managing agent who recovers it in the service charge. We quote it per building so it can be passed on without argument. In smaller B13 conversions the leaseholders often just agree between themselves and one of them books it.
Yes, most of it, and more than people expect. Fresh mud lifts well once it is properly dry and vacuumed first. Leaf tannin is the harder one, because it is a dye more than a soil, so an old tannin mark on a light stair carpet will lighten considerably but may not disappear. We will tell you which you have before we start.
Not always, and it is better to hear that now. There is a difference between soiling, which extraction lifts very well, and wear, where the pile has been walked flat or through on the nosings. On two flights in a busy Moseley house the top flight is often fine while the bottom one is worn out, and cleaning will not bring the second one back.
Usually a few hours; allow most of a day in cold, damp weather. A tall house dries unevenly and the bottom flight takes longest, so opening the house front and back helps. In a communal stairwell we work from the top landing downwards and start early, so residents can still get out of the building without walking over anything wet.
