Stirchley Carpet Cleaning for Bedrooms and Changeovers Upstairs

Carpet in a Stirchley terrace is mostly on the stairs and upstairs. Downstairs has largely gone over to laminate, engineered board or vinyl plank, because the rooms are small and hard floor survives a changeover well, so what stays carpeted is the narrow staircase and the two bedrooms above, which is also the carpet doing the most work.

The usual booking is a staircase, a landing and a bedroom, because someone is moving out or moving in, or because the stairs have started to show the towpath. Owner-occupiers doing the stairs and a bedroom together make up the rest, and the method is the same either way.

Narrow, steep stairs taking every trip in the house

A Victorian terrace staircase is narrow, straight and steep, and it is the only route between the ground floor and the bedrooms, so every trip anyone makes in the house lands on the same treads. The wear concentrates on the nosings and on the centre of each tread and does not spread out. What gets walked onto it is local too: the canal towpath and the ground at Stirchley Park and Hazelwell Park stay soft for much of the year, and there is no hallway to speak of in these houses, so outdoor material reaches the bottom step within two or three strides of the front door. In rented terraces that runs for a full tenancy before anyone deals with it.

  • Narrow straight staircases taking every trip between floors, with wear concentrating on the nosings
  • No real hallway in a two up two down, so towpath and park mud reaches the stairs almost immediately
  • Hard floors downstairs in much of the stock, which leaves the stairs and bedrooms as the only carpet
  • Tenancy agreements requiring professional carpet cleaning at the end of a term, which is the main trigger here
  • Bedroom carpet in the new-build flats, often the only soft flooring in the property

Tread by tread up a Stirchley staircase

Colour fastness gets tested on a hidden tread before anything else happens, then the flight is dry vacuumed hard, which on a Stirchley staircase pulls out more grit than the extraction that follows it. We then move upward a tread at a time and take each nosing separately, because a straight narrow flight funnels every footfall onto the same few inches and one pass down the middle leaves that band untouched. Water goes in sparingly on a boxed-in stair with skirting either side, and comes straight back out under vacuum. The pile is groomed afterwards so it dries level.

  • Tread by tread on the staircase, with the nosings treated individually
  • Thorough dry vacuuming first, since that removes more from a stair carpet than the extraction does
  • Moisture kept tight on a narrow flight, so nothing sits damp against treads or skirtings
  • A pre-spray left to work on the nosing band in particular, since that is where the soiling has concentrated

More detail on the equipment and the order of work: how we do carpet cleaning, step by step.

Stairs, bedrooms and changeovers

The usual reasons for a carpet clean here are three: a tenant or landlord on the terraced streets off the Pershore Road meeting a clause in the agreement, someone moving into a new-build flat who wants the bedroom carpets done before their bed arrives, and owner-occupiers doing the stairs and a bedroom together. Autumn and winter are when it shows, once the towpath and the park ground are wet and the stairs start carrying it. Because these are small jobs and we are seven minutes away, a slot within the week is usually possible.

Rooms, flights and the minimum charge in a B30 quote

We quote by the individual room and by the flight, and any single small booking meets a floor price, because the machine takes as long to set up and pack away for one staircase as for a whole house. In Stirchley that shapes what is sensible to order. If the stairs are the only carpet you have, you will meet that floor price whatever happens, so the two bedrooms alongside them cost very little extra and a good deal more if you ring us again in April. Pet contamination and heavy soiling are quoted on top of that, and only after we have looked at them properly.

Stairs on a shorter cycle than the bedrooms

An owner-occupied terrace wants doing on a yearly to eighteen-monthly cycle, and the staircase alone nearer the short end of that, since it absorbs everything walked in through a front door that opens more or less straight into the living room. Halve those gaps if a dog uses the stairs, or if anyone in the house has asthma or a dust allergy. Rented property works differently: once at the changeover, which is what the agreement normally asks for in any case.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, though it pays to plan it. Any single small booking meets a floor price covering setup and pack-down, so ordering the stairs on their own in autumn and the bedrooms in spring means meeting that twice. If both are due, put them on one visit. Being just up the road, a small job is no trouble at our end.

Usually, yes: many tenancy agreements specifically require professional cleaning at the end of the term, so check yours. If it does we will include it with your check-out clean and confirm in writing that it was carried out, which is what an agent will ask for.

Mostly, yes, and usually more than people are braced for. The thing we check before quoting is the nosing band: where the pile has gone bald along the front edge of a tread there is nothing left to clean, and no machine puts it back. We would rather show you that on the day you ask than once you have paid.

Usually within a few hours, though in cold, damp weather you should allow most of a day. A terrace staircase sits in the middle of the house with no window of its own, so it lags behind a bedroom. Open something at the front and something at the back, put the heating on for a while, and it comes round far quicker.

Yes. A loose rug is best taken up and cleaned off the floor, so no moisture sits on the laminate or board underneath, and it goes on the same visit as the stairs and bedrooms without adding a second call-out.
