Great Barr Conservatory Roof Cleaning Behind the 1930s Semis

Conservatories are part of the Great Barr streetscape. Many 1930s semis here picked up a rear conservatory at some point over the last thirty years, and most of those roofs are now old enough to have gone properly green. Polycarbonate or glass, they gather algae and then moss, and because the houses back onto each other across generous gardens, everybody can see everybody else’s roof. A green one is visible from three gardens away.

They are also rarely touched between cleans. A conservatory roof is out of reach and out of mind, so a first visit often meets a decade of growth, not a season of it. That needs solution, dwell time and sometimes a second application, which is slower work than people expect. It is also why the change is so striking: the light comes back into a room the household had quietly stopped using.

Algae, moss off the tiles, and a blocked conservatory gutter

Three things build up on a Great Barr conservatory roof. Algae arrives first and spreads across the whole panel. Moss follows, mostly shedding down off the tiled roof above and collecting in the corrugations and along the glazing bars. Then, on the streets nearest the Scott Arms and the A34, a layer of traffic film settles over the top and binds the rest of it in place, which is why a roof on that side of the suburb looks worse than an identical one out by Red House Park. Underneath it all sits the conservatory gutter, low and directly beneath the panels, catching everything the roof sheds.

  • Polycarbonate and glass panels twenty to thirty years old, green with algae across their whole surface
  • Moss shedding down off the main hipped roof and packing into corrugations and glazing bars
  • Traffic film off the A34 and the M6 corridor binding the growth in place near the Scott Arms
  • The conservatory gutter below, filling with what the panels shed and overflowing onto the frame
  • The junction where the roof meets the rendered rear wall, which pressure washing turns into a damp problem

Low pressure, long dwell, pure water rinse

Low pressure throughout, on polycarbonate and glass alike. Solution goes on, gets proper time to break down the algae and the moss bound into it, and is then rinsed off with pure water. High pressure scratches polycarbonate, forces water past seals that are already thirty years old, and at the flashing where the roof meets the rendered rear wall it pushes water straight into the house. Frames, glazing bars and seals are cleaned by hand afterwards, and the conservatory gutter is cleared and flushed before we pack up, with no separate charge.

  • Soft-wash at low pressure with real dwell time, and never a pressure washer on a panel or a seal
  • Nothing forced at the flashing where the roof meets a rendered or pebbledashed rear wall
  • Frames, glazing bars and seals cleaned by hand, with anything perished reported, never covered over
  • The conservatory gutter cleared and flushed as part of the job, not invoiced separately

Conservatories across all three council areas

The conservatories run right through the suburb, from the older semis out towards Red House Park and Hamstead to the newer infill near the Scott Arms, and we cover the lot as one area across the Birmingham, Sandwell and Walsall stretches. Spring is the natural season, so the room is bright for summer, and pairing it with the house gutters or the windows on the same visit makes sense. Access is easy: side gates on these plots are wide and the drive takes the van.

Size, roof material and years since the last clean

Size, roof material and how many years it has been left. A conservatory cleaned last year is quick work. One that has been green for years needs two applications and considerably more dwell time, so photographs from your phone tell us far more than a description does. One limit belongs in the quote: polycarbonate that has yellowed is not dirty. That colour is ultraviolet damage to the plastic itself and cleaning will not shift it. The algae comes off completely, the yellow stays, and we will tell you which of the two you have at the quote.

A spring clean, and a second under the Red House Park trees

Once a year for most conservatories in Great Barr, done in spring. Twice a year is genuinely worth it if the roof sits under a mature tree on the Red House Park or Great Barr Hall side, or if you are close enough to the Scott Arms that traffic film settles over the algae between cleans. Whichever interval you pick for the panels, the small gutter underneath wants clearing annually, because it fills long before the roof begins to look bad.

Frequently asked questions

Almost certainly, yes. Polycarbonate that looks written off usually comes back very well with soft-washing and enough dwell time. What it needs is a second application rather than more pressure, and we would sooner price that in from photographs at the start than discover it halfway through the morning.

No, not the way we do it, and the method exists precisely because of that risk. High pressure at the seals, or at the flashing where the roof meets the rear wall, is what causes leaks in conservatories of this age. We work at low pressure and let the solution do the work. If a seal has already perished we will show you rather than clean over it.

The green will, the yellow will not. On the polycarbonate roofs behind these semis, yellowing is ultraviolet degradation of the panel material itself, so the algae comes off completely and the cast stays. A glass roof does not yellow, so where a Pheasey conservatory has glass panels the question does not arise. Only replacement panels alter the yellow.

Yes, as standard on every conservatory clean. It sits lower than the house gutter and directly under the panels, so it catches all the moss the roof sheds. When it overflows, the water runs down the frame and into the joint with the render, which is a far bigger problem than a green roof.

Yes, all three. The suburb sits across Birmingham, Sandwell and Walsall and bookings across B42, B43 and B44 are grouped on the same scheduled days at the same rates, so Pheasey, Hamstead and the Beeches are treated alike. If you are unsure which side of a boundary you fall, the postcode is all we need.
