Great Barr Deep Cleaning for 1930s Semis and Their Extensions
Deep cleaning in Great Barr is an interior job, so the three-council boundary that complicates so much else here makes no difference to it. What does make a difference is that these houses are almost all the same house. A bay-fronted 1930s semi has a hall, a through-lounge or two receptions, a rear kitchen, three bedrooms over and one bathroom that was never designed for daily showering. The layout is predictable before anyone walks in.
The second half of most Great Barr deep cleans is the part bolted on later: a rear conservatory, a kitchen extension, or both. Those rooms sit outside the routine weekly clean and quietly collect a year of neglect, and they usually take the longest. Water is not one thing across Great Barr either: B43 takes hard South Staffs supply from the Barr Beacon zone, while B42 and B44 take Birmingham’s soft Elan Valley water. So scale is a B43 job, and grease, soap scum and mould in grout are everybody’s.

The original bathroom, the extended kitchen, and scale in B43
Two things load up an interwar semi between deep cleans. The first is the bathroom, which in the unaltered houses is still the original small room over the hall, with a shower fitted over the bath and extraction that either vents into the loft or does not exist. Grout and sealant go black in there long before anything else does. The second is road dust. Houses close to the Scott Arms junction and the A34 take a fine grey film in through open windows all summer, and it settles on bay reveals, sills, curtain rails and the tops of skirtings. On the quieter crescents towards Red House Park it is a fraction of that.
- Original upstairs bathrooms with a shower over the bath and extraction venting into the loft or nowhere at all
- Grout and sealant blackening with mould, which is the build-up across all three postcodes, with scale over it in hard water B43
- A fine grey traffic film on sills, bay reveals and curtain rails in the houses nearest the Scott Arms and the A34
- Rear conservatories and kitchen extensions that fall outside the routine clean and go a full year untouched
- Kitchens where the hob, hood and filter carry months of cooking grease behind a clean-looking door front
Dry and high first, then the bay reveals, then kitchen and bathroom
We start dry and high: coving, picture rails where they survive, tops of doors and wardrobes, then down through the bay reveals and sills where the road film sits. Kitchen and bathroom follow, degreased and sanitised, with grout and sealant left to soak before any scrubbing. The conservatory is done as a room in its own right, glazing bars, frames, floor and the underside of the roof, not treated as an outbuilding. Floors last. Because we can park on the drive, the full kit including the extraction machine comes in at the start.
- Dry work down from the ceiling first, finishing on the bay reveals and sills where road film collects
- Grout, sealant and shower screens given soak time, because mould needs dwell rather than force
- The conservatory cleaned as a room, internal roof and glazing bars included, not skipped as an afterthought
- Full kit brought straight in off the drive, so carpet extraction can run at the same visit if you want it

Inside a Great Barr semi
These bookings come from one of three places: a house being sold after thirty or forty years with one owner, a family taking possession and wanting everything reset before the furniture lands, or an annual pre-Christmas clean on a house that is otherwise well kept. We cover the whole suburb on identical terms, whether your address falls to Birmingham, to Sandwell around Hamstead and the Newton Road side, or to Walsall up towards Pheasey and Beacon Road. Parking is on your own drive, which is the unglamorous reason a full-day job here runs to time. Great Barr is covered on set days, so book a little ahead.
Houses this alike make the variables easy to name
Condition sets the price rather than bedroom count, and in Great Barr the houses are so alike that the variables are easy to name. The oven comes first, and a neglected one can add hours by itself. After that it is how far mould has gone into the bathroom grout and sealant, whether the conservatory and any rear extension are included, and whether carpets are being extracted at the same visit. Houses near the junction usually need more time on windows, reveals and sills than an identical semi half a mile out. Send photographs over on WhatsApp and you get a fixed figure, not an hourly guess.
Spring and pre-Christmas resets for a Great Barr semi
Once or twice a year alongside your normal cleaning is the pattern that suits most households here, generally spring and again in the run-up to Christmas. Move to twice a year if the bathroom extraction is poor or the property sits within sight of the Scott Arms, because the grout mould and the road film both return quicker there. A house changing hands needs only the one clean at the changeover itself.
Excellent job, highly recommended.
Absolutely brilliant service. Adefem was professional, job well done. Everything was left beautifully clean, and I was genuinely impressed.
Charles was great. He was very professional and did a great job.

Frequently asked questions
Yes. Great Barr genuinely does sit across Birmingham, Sandwell and Walsall. We run B42, B43 and B44 as a single area, booked onto the same set days, and the boundary changes nothing about the price.
Very likely, yes. B43 is supplied by South Staffs Water from the Barr Beacon zone and the water is hard, so a descaler earns its place there. B42 and B44 take Birmingham’s soft Elan Valley water and barely scale at all. What blackens a 1930s bathroom either way is mould in the grout and sealant plus soap scum on the screen, and those want the right chemistry and enough time, not harder scrubbing.
Yes, from the inside. Internal glazing bars, frames, sills, the floor and the underside of the roof are all part of it. Cleaning the outside of the roof panels is separate soft-wash work that we quote on its own.
If you are near the Scott Arms or on the A34 side, that is traffic film off the M6 corridor coming in through open windows. It is finer than household dust and it lands on hard flat surfaces first. Houses on the crescents towards Red House Park get noticeably less of it.
Five to eight hours on site for a standard 1930s semi in reasonable order, and longer once a conservatory, a rear extension and a badly neglected oven are in the mix. We give you an estimated time with the fixed price, so a full day gets booked as a full day.
