Whole-House Carpet Cleaning in Northfield, Lounge to Landing

Carpet is still the default floor covering in most Northfield houses, which makes this whole-house work more often than not. A sensible booking is the through-lounge, the hall, the stairs and the landing in one visit, with a couple of bedrooms added because the machine is already out and running. Northfield is twelve minutes from base, so a slot within the week is usually possible and we can start in the morning and give the carpets the rest of the day to dry.

Rented property is the other side of it. B31 has a lot of privately let ex-council houses and estate flats, and many of those tenancies require professional carpet cleaning at the end of the term. That work spreads through the year with no summer changeover peak, so a between-tenancy booking is usually easy to fit in at short notice. Landlords can pair it with the move-out clean itself.

Victoria Common mud and a straight stair in a B31 hall

Northfield walks a great deal of outdoors indoors. Victoria Common and the green spaces around the estates are dog-walking ground, and between November and March it arrives at the front door as wet mud. In a house with a straight staircase off the hall, it is on the stair carpet within four strides. The through-lounge is the other pressure point: knocking the front and back rooms into one gives you a single large carpeted area carrying every route through the house, so the wear concentrates into tracks between the door, the sofa and the kitchen. Long tenures make it worse again, since a carpet down for fifteen years holds a very great deal.

  • Wet ground at Victoria Common and the local green spaces, walked indoors all winter
  • Straight staircases off the hall, taking mud within a few strides of the front door
  • Through-lounges knocked into one, so traffic concentrates into worn tracks across a single large area
  • Carpets that have been down ten or fifteen years in long-held family homes
  • Let houses and estate flats where the tenancy requires professional extraction at the end

Fibre check, a hard dry vacuum, then extraction

Before anything else we check the fibre and take a colour-fastness test somewhere it will not be seen. Then the carpet is dry vacuumed hard, and in a B31 hall that alone removes the bulk of what is in there. Pre-spray goes down and is given real dwell time along the worn tracks across a through-lounge, then agitated into the pile. The staircase is done step by step, never dragged over in one pass, since the damage concentrates on the front edge of each tread. Hot water extraction lifts what has been loosened, and the pile is groomed so a big room dries evenly.

  • Dry vacuuming before any water goes down, because wetting dry soil only turns it to mud in the pile
  • Pre-spray left to work along the worn tracks that a through-lounge develops
  • Every tread and riser done individually, with attention to the nosings, where a stair carpet really wears
  • Pile groomed after extraction so a single large room dries at the same rate throughout

More detail on the equipment and the order of work: our carpet cleaning method.

What a B31 carpet clean usually covers

Family houses on the estates are the core of this, generally booking lounge, hall, stairs and landing together, with bedrooms added at the same visit because it costs far less per room that way. Autumn through to the New Year is the natural time, once the Common has started arriving on the hall carpet. Landlord work on flats and let houses around Bristol Road South and out towards Longbridge makes up the rest. Access helps: most Northfield houses have a drive, so the machine and the hoses come off the van a few steps from your door.

Through-lounges and stairs on a Northfield carpet quote

We charge by the room, with stairs counted as an item of their own, and there is a minimum for one small room on its own because the van has to be set up either way. In Northfield that has a specific consequence: a through-lounge is one space but two rooms’ worth of carpet, so it is priced accordingly and we say so on the phone, not on the doorstep. Adding bedrooms to a visit already booked is the cheapest carpet cleaning you will buy from us. Pet contamination, heavy soiling and stains needing individual treatment all push the time up. Where pile has worn through on a nosing or in a doorway, extraction cleans it but cannot put fibre back.

Twelve to eighteen months, nearer twelve in winter mud season

Every twelve to eighteen months for a family home in B31, and nearer twelve where the hall and stairs take winter mud off the Common. Six to twelve months with dogs, small children or anybody in the house with allergies. Rented property wants it at each tenancy change, which a good many B31 agreements require in writing anyway. Community rooms and offices with real footfall are better served twice a year.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, for pricing it counts as two rooms, and we mention that when you ring so there is no surprise at the door. Knocking the front and back rooms together gives a single space with roughly double the carpet area and double the traffic through it, so it takes about twice as long to do properly.

Usually, yes. It normally dries in a few hours with the windows open and the heating on; allow most of a day in cold, damp weather. A morning start gives the house the whole afternoon, and a north-facing room that stays cold benefits from an hour of heating after we have gone.

Usually, but let us look first. Extraction lifts a startling amount of soil and stair carpets often come up far better than people expect. What it cannot do is put fibre back, so where the pile has gone on the nosings you get clean and worn, not clean and new. We will tell you which it is.

Yes, and it can go in the same booking as the move-out clean. Plenty of B31 tenancy agreements require professional extraction at the end of the term, and we can confirm in writing that it was carried out, which is what an agent or a deposit scheme will ask you for.

Usually, though it depends how far it has gone. Odour sitting in the pile comes out with extraction and a deodorising treatment. Where a pet has been through the carpet into the underlay or the boards beneath, cleaning the top of it will not solve the problem, and we tell you that before taking any money for it.
