Rubery Carpet Cleaning for Lickey Hills Mud on the Straight Flight

Carpet cleaning in B45 follows the layout of the houses closely. A 1960s or 70s semi puts a straight flight of stairs directly off the hall, with a through lounge to one side, and that run of hall, stairs, landing and lounge takes very nearly all of the household traffic. Bedrooms in the same house can look almost new by comparison, which is why whole-house quotes here often come back smaller than people expect.

What gets walked in is local too. Rubery sits at the foot of the Lickey Hills, so this is a walking and dog-owning area, and in winter that comes back on boots and paws through a front door that opens straight onto the hall carpet. The drive helps and hurts: no garden path to wipe your feet on, just car to door.

Hill mud landing on the first two metres of hall carpet

Two patterns shape a Rubery carpet clean. The first is arrival soil. There is no buffer between the drive and the hall in these houses, so grit, road salt and wet mud from the hills land on the first two metres of carpet and get ground in by everyone who comes through. The second is stair nosings. A straight flight takes the whole household’s movement on the front edge of each tread, and that edge greys out long before the rest of the carpet does. Underneath both sits the age of the carpet itself. A lot of this stock has fitted carpet that has been down fifteen or twenty years, so it helps to know what extraction can and cannot recover.

  • Halls opening straight off the drive, with no path or porch to take the grit first
  • Mud and wet off the Lickey Hills, walked in by families and dogs all winter
  • Straight flight stairs where the wear concentrates on the front edge of each nosing
  • Through lounges with a single traffic lane worn between the door and the seating
  • Long-lived fitted carpet in owner-occupied houses, where the question is soil or real pile loss

Fibre test, a long dry vacuum, then extraction

We test the fibre and the colour fastness somewhere out of sight before touching the middle of the room. Then a thorough dry vacuum, which lifts most of the grit that came in off the drive and is what separates a good result from a muddy one. A pre-spray goes down and is left long enough to soften the greasy soil that binds everything else into the pile, then the flight is done one tread at a time, each nosing worked on its own. Hot water extraction follows, the pile is groomed to dry evenly, and we tell you how to speed the drying up.

  • Colour fastness tested out of sight first, on carpet that may be twenty years old
  • Heavy dry vacuum before any water, since most of what a Rubery hall carries is dry grit
  • Each stair tread done individually, nosings worked on their own, since the wear lives on that front edge
  • Pre-spray given real dwell time, since that does more of the work than the machine alone

Halls, stairs and lounges across B45

The typical job is a family semi or detached house on the streets off New Road or climbing towards the Lickeys, with the hall, stairs, landing and lounge done together because those four take the traffic. Dogs are a big part of life at the bottom of the Lickeys, and so is mud. Autumn and the weeks before Christmas are the obvious times to book, once the wet season starts moving the hills onto the hall carpet. Church and community halls on the Bromsgrove side are covered too, ideally just after a heavy season of hire.

Adding the lounge or landing to a Rubery hall and stairs

Rooms are priced individually and each flight separately, with a floor price for one small room, since the machine has to come out of the van and be set up either way. In Rubery that has a practical consequence: booking the stairs alone means paying that floor price, so adding the hall and the lounge to the same visit is far better value per room than calling us back in the spring. Heavy soiling, dog accidents and stain-by-stain treatment all add time. There is a ceiling, too. Extraction lifts a remarkable amount of soil, but a nosing that has worn through to the backing comes back clean, not new.

Twelve to eighteen months, sooner with a hill-walked dog

Twelve to eighteen months suits most Rubery households for the hall, stairs and lounge. Six to twelve months in houses with dogs walked on the hills, small children or an allergy sufferer in the house, because the load on that hall carpet is heavier than in a house with a path and a porch. Bedrooms in this stock can usually go two or three years between cleans. Halls and community rooms want it twice a year, timed just after their busiest hire season.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, it is the part most worth doing, since in this layout the hall and the straight flight carry the traffic of the whole house. A floor price covers getting the machine out of the van and rigged, so it is worth asking what the lounge or the landing adds on the same trip instead of paying that floor price twice in a year.

Yes, and it responds well, because most of it is dry particulate soil once it has had a chance to dry rather than a stain. That is why the dry vacuum stage matters so much here. Clay ground into the pile while wet is harder and takes pre-treatment, but it still improves a long way.

Usually a great deal of it. Where a dog has only ever brought damp in, cleaning and a deodorising treatment sorts it. Where there have been accidents that soaked into the underlay, the smell is under the carpet rather than in it, and no amount of surface extraction is going to fix that. We will say which one we think you have.

Sometimes, and sometimes not, so we would sooner look at it before you spend. If it is grey with soil it will transform. If the pile is crushed flat or worn through at the nosings, that is fibre loss and cleaning does not bring it back. We tell you which before we quote, not afterwards.

Yes, usually. Drying takes a few hours with the windows open; allow most of a day in cold, damp weather. Rubery has one advantage here: on this open, exposed ground there is nearly always some air moving, so cross ventilation dries a hall carpet quickly if you open the front and back together for an hour.
