Quinton Carpet Cleaning for Three-Storey Townhouse Stairs
The council-built townhouses concentrate wear in one place. Three floors are served by a single stair core, so every trip anybody makes between bedroom, bathroom and kitchen goes up or down carpet that a two-storey house would never subject to that. The nosings wear first and the landings go next, and in a lot of these properties the stair and landing carpet is the only carpet genuinely worth extracting, because it has taken more traffic than everything else put together.
The Ridgacre semis are more conventional: fitted carpet through the hall, the living room, the stairs and the bedrooms, and whole-house bookings are normal there. What they also have is Woodgate Valley Country Park on the doorstep, and from November onwards that arrives on the hall carpet on boots and dog paws within a few strides of the back door. The privately let ex-council houses add changeover work between tenancies too.

Country park mud from the back, road film from the front
Soil arrives here from two directions and they need different handling. From behind the house it is the country park and the estate gardens: wet ground, clay and leaf mould walked in all winter, which is dry particulate soil once it dries and comes out largely with proper vacuuming. From the front it is the road. Hallway carpet inside a door on a busy frontage develops a grey band across the first metre that will not vacuum away, because the deposit is oily and binds to the fibre rather than sitting loose in the pile. Then there are the townhouse stairs, taking the traffic of an entire household on two flights.
- Two flights and three landings in a townhouse, carrying the whole household on one stair core
- Wet ground off Woodgate Valley Country Park walked in through the winter months
- The grey band inside a front door on a main road frontage, which is oily soil and will not vacuum out
- Full fitted carpet through hall, living room and stairs across the Ridgacre semis
- Turnover in the privately let ex-council houses, where extraction is often a condition of the tenancy
Tread by tread on a two-flight townhouse stair
We test fibre and colour fastness out of sight first, then vacuum dry and thoroughly, which is where most of the country park comes back out. A staircase is done one tread at a time instead of being swept through, because both the soil and the wear collect on the nosings, and two flights of that is an afternoon in itself. The band inside a front door gets a stronger pre-spray and longer dwell than the rest of the hall, because oily soil needs breaking down before extraction will lift it. Hot water extraction follows, then the pile is groomed so it dries evenly.
- One tread at a time up both flights, with unhurried attention on the nosings where wear collects
- A stronger pre-spray and longer dwell on the first metre inside a frontage door
- Dry vacuuming done properly before any water, since winter soil off the park is mostly dry particulate
- Pile groomed after extraction so a stair carpet dries evenly, without patches

Whole houses, stair cores and changeovers
On the Ridgacre estate a family home usually makes sense as one visit covering hall, living room, stairs and landing, since the setup cost is the same whichever way round it goes. In a townhouse, booking the stair core alone is a fair choice given where the traffic goes. Landlords on the privately let ex-council houses can pair extraction with the check-out clean between tenancies. Autumn through to Christmas is when the need peaks on the country park side, once the ground has gone properly wet and started arriving indoors.
Flights, landings and the minimum charge in a B32 townhouse
Rooms and flights of stairs are counted separately, and there is a floor under the price for one small room, since hauling the machine in and setting it up takes as long either way. That has a direct consequence in a townhouse: two flights and three landings are priced as more than one staircase, and the quote shows that upfront so there is no surprise at the door. Anything badly soiled, any pet contamination and any stain needing its own chemistry all push the hours up. Extraction has limits, though. It lifts a remarkable amount, but a grey band that turns out to be worn pile rather than embedded soil will come up clean without coming up new.
Yearly for a townhouse stair core, longer for a Ridgacre family home
Twelve to eighteen months for a Ridgacre family home, and closer to twelve for a townhouse stair core, which absorbs the traffic of three floors and shows it fastest. Halve that again, to somewhere between six months and a year, for households with a dog, small children or an allergy, especially on the country park side where the winter walk comes indoors twice a day. Privately let houses generally want it at each changeover, and many agreements say so in writing.

Frequently asked questions
Yes, usually most of it, and much better than vacuuming manages. On a frontage carpet that mark is oily road soil bound into the fibre, so it needs a stronger pre-spray and proper dwell time before extraction, and more suction alone will not do it. Where the pile in that first metre has actually worn down, that part is fibre loss and no amount of cleaning restores it.
Per flight, so a three-storey townhouse costs more than a two-storey house with one staircase. It is more work: two runs of treads and risers plus three landings, all done by hand, with no open floor for the machine to sweep across. You get that figure at the quote, not on the day.
Yes, often, in a townhouse, because that is the carpet carrying the whole household. There is a minimum charge covering setup, so if you are paying it anyway it is worth asking what adding a bedroom or the hall would come to on the same visit instead of calling us back in a few months and paying it twice.
Yes, and most of it comes out at the vacuuming stage, before anything wet. Once dry it is loose particulate soil sitting in the pile, which is why we vacuum properly before any water goes down. Wetting that soil first turns it into mud in the carpet, which is how a home machine can leave a room looking worse.
Usually, yes. Drying is usually a few hours; allow most of a day in cold, damp weather. Opening the windows and putting the heating on helps, and a stair core in a townhouse dries well because warm air rises through it. We extract hard and never leave carpet saturated, and we tell you what to do to speed it along before we leave.
