Harborne Commercial Cleaning for High Street Shops and Clinics
Harborne High Street is a genuine independent trading street, and it generates most of the commercial cleaning in B17. Delis, cafes, bakeries, salons and barbers, gift and homeware shops, estate agents, a pharmacy and a scatter of small units, nearly all of them owner-run or a branch with a manager and no facilities budget. None of them can be cleaned at eleven on a Saturday, so our visits start early. We work Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm and Saturday 9am to 6pm, and an 8am weekday start usually has a unit done before it opens.
The other half of the work has nothing to do with retail. The Queen Elizabeth Hospital end of the area and the roads towards Harborne Road carry dental practices, physiotherapy and podiatry rooms, private consulting suites and small clinics, along with offices on the upper floors above the High Street units. In those rooms the standard is set by an infection-control policy, not by how the place looks, and the timing follows a clinic list instead of shop opening times.

Treatment-room boundaries, salon floors and High Street grit
In a clinical room the problem is boundaries more than dirt. A cleaner working in a treatment room has to know what is not theirs to go near: patient notes, instrument trays, sharps bins, clinical waste, equipment surfaces and anything already prepared for the next patient. Get that wrong and you have created a problem far larger than the one you were paid to solve, which is why the scope for a practice has to name the exclusions as carefully as the inclusions. Salons are a different discipline again: hair clippings work their way under fixed units, colour splashes stain a basin surround and a vinyl floor permanently if they are left, and product residue on the floor around a washpoint is a grip problem first and an appearance one second. Running through all of it is the High Street itself, which puts grit through every door onto matting that was sized for a quieter road.
- Treatment and consulting rooms where the scope has to name what a cleaner does not touch: notes, sharps bins, instrument trays and clinical waste
- Clinic lists in place of office hours, so a visit is fitted before the first patient or after a list that ends early enough
- Salons where clippings under fixed units, colour staining on basins and floor grip around a washpoint matter more than tidiness
- Owner-run shops, cafes and delis with nobody free to clean before opening or willing to stay after close
- Grit carried in from a High Street pavement onto matting that was never sized for the traffic it gets
- Offices and practice rooms on upper floors, reached by a stair the ground-floor unit uses as well
Exclusions written first, colour-coded kit, matting as a named item
Every clinical or quasi-clinical site starts with a written scope that lists the exclusions first. Where you have your own infection-control or decontamination policy we work to that, in your order of rooms, and we do not move, open or handle notes, instruments or clinical waste under any circumstances. Equipment is colour-coded and separated so nothing that has been in a washroom goes near a treatment surface or a food area. On the retail side the visit is built around the entrance, because that is where the floor fails first: matting cleaned as a named item, hard floor kept on a neutral routine, and glass at eye level finished where a customer actually sees it.
- A written scope that lists what we do not touch before it lists what we clean, on any clinical or consulting room
- Your own infection-control policy followed where you have one, in your order of rooms
- Colour-coded, separated equipment, so nothing crosses between a washroom, a treatment surface and a food area
- Entrance matting cleaned as a named item on retail visits, because a High Street floor gives way at the door first

Timing a visit on the High Street
Retail premises sit on the High Street itself and the units either side of it, close together, so the van can stay in one spot for a visit. That matters, because loading on the High Street is the single real constraint here and it is only comfortable early. The practices sit further out, on the roads towards the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Harborne Road, and they take a slot fitted to a list, not a fixed clock time. Lordswood Road and the units towards Quinton take the same kind of slot. We are about ten minutes away, so an 8am start is straightforward.
Room count and protocol for clinics, floor and matting for shops
Retail and hospitality contracts are quoted on floor area, frequency, the number of washrooms and whether consumables are supplied by us or by you. A clinical contract is priced differently, because room count and the protocol matter more than square footage: a practice with several small treatment rooms takes longer than one open space of the same area, and working to a written decontamination protocol takes longer than a general clean. Matting and hard floor area push the retail figure about more than most people expect. The tasks, the frequency and the access arrangements are written into the specification before a contract starts, so nothing rests on a verbal promise.
Every trading morning for cafes, end of session for clinics
Cafes, delis and bakeries generally need a visit every trading morning. Salons do well on daily or several times a week, because clippings and product residue are a daily production. Shops and estate agents manage on two or three visits a week, with the frontage glass on its own shorter interval. Dental and consulting rooms usually take a visit on each clinic day, fitted before or between lists, dropping to weekly for a practice that only runs two or three sessions. Offices above the High Street are typically fine weekly.
Absolutely brilliant service. Adefem was professional, job well done. Everything was left beautifully clean, and I was genuinely impressed.

Frequently asked questions
The room, the floor, the touch points, the washroom and the waiting area; the second half of the question is the important one. We clean the room, the floor, the touch points, the washroom and the waiting area. We do not move, open or handle patient notes, we do not touch instruments, trays or anything set up for the next patient, and we do not go near sharps bins or clinical waste beyond reporting a bin that needs changing. All of that is written into the scope before the first visit so it never depends on memory.
Where the list finishes early enough, yes. Our visits finish by 6pm, so a practice that closes mid-afternoon or runs a short Saturday list suits an end-of-session slot, with a little slack built in for a list that overruns. For a practice seeing patients until six, the workable slot is 8am before the first appointment, which is tighter if you open early. We fit the visit to the list you run and agree it in writing.
Yes, and it is usually product residue, not water. Conditioner and styling product build a film on a vinyl floor that an ordinary mop spreads without lifting, and it is worst exactly where you least want it. It needs a degreasing routine on the floor around the washpoints and chairs, not just more mopping, plus getting under and behind the fixed units where clippings collect. We would put that in as a named item so nobody assumes it is covered.
It is the reason the High Street work is early. Loading is straightforward first thing and awkward from mid-morning onwards, so we park once and carry the kit to your door. If your unit is on a stretch with particular restrictions, say so when you book and we will schedule around it before the first morning.
We write down exactly what the time buys. On a small unit that is usually the washroom done properly, the floor, the matting, the bins and the glass at eye level, with the back areas on a longer cycle. A washroom that customers use is the room that gets judged, so it is the last thing we would let a short visit skim. If what you want will not fit in the time you have budgeted, we will tell you which parts to drop.
