Driveway Cleaning in Halesowen for Sloping Drives and Steps

The drives and paths here slope, and that changes what the algae means. On the flat, a green patio is something you get round to. On a one in eight drive with steps at the top of it, the same film is what puts somebody on their back between the car and the front door, usually in the dark, usually in December.

Slope also changes how the cleaning has to be done. Water and everything it lifts runs downhill, so working uphill just sends silt back over what you have finished. We work in sections from the top down, keep the runoff controlled, and lift the silt out before it can find the nearest gully. Where a drive runs up to render or pebbledash, the pressure comes down: driving water into an exposed wall is not a trade worth making.

Gradient, steps and a path that ices over

Halesowen gives this job a particular shape. Drives run at a gradient, often with a step or two, a retaining wall, and a path round to a back garden that sits a level or two below the house. Surfaces stay damp because they are shaded by that same bank or fence, and algae takes hold on the shaded stretch even when the rest of the drive looks dry. Add the exposure and moss establishes in the joints far quicker than you would expect. The result is a surface that is fine in July and treacherous by the middle of November, on ground where a fall is worse.

  • Sloping drives and front paths gone slick with algae, which on a gradient makes this a safety job
  • Steps between pavement and door, where the nosings green up first and are the worst place to lose your footing
  • Shaded strips beside a retaining wall or a bank, damp long after the open part of the drive has dried
  • Moss rooted in block paving joints, which is what actually costs you grip, more than the colour on top
  • Render and pebbledash right at the edge of the drive, which rules out the pressure most people expect us to use

Top down in sections so runoff never crosses clean ground

The surface gets identified before anything is switched on, because a 1930s concrete drive, a block-paved one from the nineties and a quarry-tiled front path all want different handling. Sound concrete and block paving take rotary cleaning. Steps, path edges close to render, and anything period are soft-washed instead. We work top down in sections so the runoff never crosses finished ground, take the moss out of the joints as well as the film off the surface, and clear the displaced silt away instead of letting it wash to the bottom of the drive and set.

  • Worked downhill in sections, with the runoff controlled so nothing silts up the gully at the bottom
  • Joints cleared of rooted moss and weed, since that is what the grip is lost to
  • Low pressure anywhere the surface meets render, pebbledash or an exposed wall
  • Steps and their nosings done individually, because that is where a slip becomes a fall

Grip on a gradient, not just colour

On Halesowen’s slopes this is the exterior job that earns its money. Estate housing on the higher ground has the clearest examples: a drive falling away to the pavement, a side path in permanent shade, steps up to a door. Autumn is the better booking, ahead of the wet months, though spring is when the winter growth is easiest to see. B62 and B63 are Birmingham-district postcodes in Dudley borough, about twenty minutes from our base, and a slot within the week is usually possible.

Area, condition and the slower work on a slope

Area and condition set the price, and gradient adds to it, because working in controlled sections down a slope is slower than covering a flat drive in long passes. Steps are priced separately from the drive itself: they are fiddly, they matter most, and they take a disproportionate share of the time. Two notes before you book. Where cleaning leaves block paving joints short of kiln-dried sand, re-sanding is quoted separately, and on a slope it matters more because loose blocks move underfoot. And old oil soaked into porous concrete usually lightens a long way without disappearing.

Before winter every year on a sloping drive

Annually for anything on a slope, because grip is the point, so the visit wants to land before winter, not in the spring after it. A shaded side path may want doing twice. Open, sunny, level areas can go two years without becoming a problem. If your drive is only ever green in one strip, ask us to quote that strip on its own and leave the rest until it needs it.

Frequently asked questions

The grip, because the grip is lost to the algae film and to moss rooted in the joints, and both of those come out. On a Halesowen slope that is the whole point. On a shaded slope it starts returning within the year, which is why we suggest an annual clean; one visit does not sort it permanently.

Yes, at full pressure, so we do not use it there. Render and pebbledash on an exposed elevation are already taking driving rain, and a pressure washer pushes water straight into them. We drop to a soft-wash along that edge and keep the rotary work to the sound middle of the surface, which gets the same result without a damp wall in six months.

Yes, and they are quoted as their own item because they take a disproportionate amount of the time. Nosings and the front edge of each tread are where the algae holds and where a foot goes, so they are done one at a time instead of being sluiced over with everything else.

Downhill, which is exactly why we work in sections from the top. Runoff is kept off the parts already finished, silt is lifted out, never flushed into the nearest gully, and the bottom of the drive is cleared before we leave. On a slope, a job not managed that way simply moves the mess onto somebody else.

Before the wet months, if grip is the point, so late summer and autumn are the sensible slots. Booking in April, after a winter spent picking your way down the drive, is fine too. It is just a season later than it needed to be. We avoid hard frost.
