Alvechurch Driveway and Patio Cleaning, Gravel to Old Stone
This is the Alvechurch service where knowing the method up front saves money, because a good many B48 properties have gravel. A gravel drive cannot be pressure washed. There is no gentle version of it either: pressure throws the stone about, drives the fines down into the sub-base and leaves you with a worse surface than the one you started with. What we do on gravel is different work altogether, and we explain that at the quote, before anyone turns up with a machine.
The rest of the village splits the way everything else here does. Old brick and stone paths, steps and thresholds around The Square and St Laurence are soft-washed at low pressure, because lime jointing blows out and soft brick spalls under a lance. Block paving and sound concrete on the modern valley housing take conventional rotary cleaning at the right setting. Using the wrong method on the wrong surface is how these jobs get expensive.

Valley damp, gravel and lime-jointed paths in Alvechurch
The valley is why hard standing here greens over so fast. Humidity off the Arrow, the canal and the marina keeps shaded surfaces damp for most of the year, and a north-facing path or a flight of steps under a hedge turns slippery as well as unsightly. On top of that sits the rural soiling load: leaf tannin staining, hedge clippings mulching down into block joints, and mud and silt washed off adjacent fields and lanes onto driveway edges after heavy rain. Gravel gathers all of it at once, grows weed up through it, and looks grey and mossy long before the stone itself has actually worn out.
- Gravel drives, which cannot be pressure washed and need clearing, weeding and topping up instead
- Valley damp holding algae on north-facing paths and steps for most of the year
- Old brick, stone and lime-jointed paths in the core, where a lance blows the joint straight out
- Hedge clippings and leaf tannin mulching down into block paving joints
- Field and lane silt washing onto drive edges and thresholds after heavy rain
Rake the gravel, soft-wash the old stone, rotary-clean the block
The surface decides the method, and we settle that before anything is switched on. Gravel is raked back, cleared of leaf and weed growth, treated against regrowth and levelled, with the mossy edging and hard standing around it cleaned properly, and we will tell you if what it really needs is a fresh top layer of stone. Old brick, stone and steps are soft-washed: solution on, dwell time, gentle rinse, nothing driven into lime mortar or soft brick. Sound block paving and concrete on the modern housing get rotary cleaning, joints cleared, and re-sanding discussed beforehand.
- Gravel raked, cleared and treated, never washed, because washing only scatters it
- Soft-wash only on old brick, stone, steps and anything abutting lime mortar or timber framing
- Rotary cleaning kept to sound block paving and concrete on the modern valley housing
- Kiln-dried sand replacement raised at quoting stage, with displaced silt carted away afterwards
More detail on the equipment and the order of work: our patio & driveway cleaning method.
Gravel in the village, block paving in the valley
Gravel is everywhere in Alvechurch, on the older properties in the core and on plenty of the larger modern houses through the valley. Block paving turns up mostly on the later estates and the newer detached housing. Around The Square the work is more often a brick or stone path, a set of worn steps and a threshold than a drive at all. Spring is the natural time, once the winter growth has shown itself, and B48 is covered on set days, so book a few weeks ahead.
Why the surface, as much as the area, sets a B48 patio quote
Area and condition set the price, but the surface sets the method and the method sets the time. Soft-washing an old village path is not the quick option: solution needs dwell time and every step and edge is hand work, and a path green for years may want a second application. Gravel is priced as clearance and treatment, and the quote will say when a drive has reached the point where topping up the stone is better value than any amount of cleaning. On block paving, cleaning takes the kiln-dried sand out of the joints, so re-sanding is quoted separately when the joints need it, raised before we start.
Every year for shaded valley paths, a spring tidy for gravel
Annually for anything shaded in the valley bottom, which covers most village paths and steps, because the damp brings algae back inside the year however well it was cleaned. On steps the interval is about safety as much as looks. Block paving on the modern housing is usually fine at every one to two years. Gravel is better thought of as maintenance than cleaning: a clear and a weed treatment each spring, with a fresh top layer of stone every few years.

Frequently asked questions
No, and nobody should. Gravel is loose stone, so a lance simply scatters it, drives the fine material down into the sub-base and leaves ruts and bare patches. Gravel gets raked, cleared of weed and leaf, treated against regrowth and levelled, and the hard edging around it cleaned. If it is thin and grey underneath, a fresh layer of stone is what will fix it.
No. High pressure blows out lime jointing, spalls soft brick and drives water into the base of a wall that has to breathe. Everything in the old core is soft-washed at low pressure with dwell time. Rotary cleaning is for sound block paving and concrete on the modern valley housing, and the quote names which one you have.
You are in a river valley. The Arrow, the canal and the marina keep humidity up, and a shaded or north-facing surface down here stays damp far longer than ground above the valley floor. The growth cleans off completely each time; it simply returns sooner than it would on an open hilltop plot.
Usually, yes. Rotary cleaning inevitably lifts the kiln-dried sand out of the joints, and without it the blocks start to move. Where the joints need it, re-sanding is quoted separately, and it goes into the quote conversation at the start. Out here hedge clippings and leaf mulch fill those joints again fast, which is another reason to get the sand back in.
Mostly, and often completely if it is recent. Oil soaked into porous concrete over years lightens considerably but seldom vanishes. On old village brick and stone we are more cautious again, because the treatment has to stay gentle enough not to bleach the surface or attack the lime mortar around it.
