Handsworth Front Path, Yard and Forecourt Cleaning
Handsworth is a terraced area first and this service has to be written for that. The streets running off the Soho Road and back towards Handsworth Park are two and three-storey bay-fronted houses packed tight, with narrow frontages, shared entries and almost no off-street parking anywhere on the grid. On a great many of those houses the surface worth cleaning is an original tiled or flagged front path between the gate and the door, along with the yard and entry at the back, and each has specific problems.
Two other markets sit alongside it. The Soho Road is a long, busy high street and its shops, takeaways and small premises have paved forecourts and thresholds that take trading wear more than weather. And the larger former villas towards Hamstead Road, some of them divided into flats decades ago, do have real frontage hardstanding: gravel, tarmac or a carriage sweep behind a wall, which is the closest thing in B21 to the driveway work found in the suburbs. Each of the three is worth naming separately.

What wears out a Handsworth tiled path, yard or Soho Road threshold
The problems here have nothing to do with a suburban drive. An original tiled path is a hundred years old, laid on soft bedding, and what damages it is not neglect but the pressure washer somebody borrowed to clean it. Rear yards behind the terraces are small, walled and reached through the house, so they get almost no sun and hold a black algae film across the whole floor. Shared entries are worse again, with a building on either side keeping them damp from October to April on the one route to the bins. On the Soho Road the issue is trade: food waste, grease and spillage at a takeaway threshold, which goes black and tacky and needs degreasing, not blasting.
- Original tiled and flagged front paths, easily wrecked by high pressure and expensive to replace when they are
- Small walled rear yards reached only through the house, shaded all year and slick with algae by late autumn
- Shared entries between terraces, damp on both sides and used as the unlit route to the bins
- Takeaway and shop thresholds on the Soho Road carrying food waste and grease rather than ordinary dirt
- Weeds established in the joints of old flagging where the jointing has long since washed out
- Genuine frontage hardstanding on the larger villas towards Hamstead Road, mostly gravel and tarmac, seldom block paving
Encaustic tile, blue brick and tarmac each get a different wash
The surface gets identified before anything is switched on, and on one Handsworth street that can change four times: encaustic tile on a front path, blue engineering brick in an entry, poured concrete in a yard, tarmac on a villa frontage. Sound concrete and engineering brick take rotary cleaning at a controlled pressure. Original tile and old lime-jointed brick are soft washed at low pressure instead, because pressure lifts tiles and blows the bedding out from under them. Tarmac takes noticeably less than concrete does. Commercial thresholds get a degreasing step with real contact time before anything is rinsed, since grease is a chemical problem and more force will not shift it.
- Every surface identified first, with the pressure set to suit the most fragile material present
- Original tiled paths soft washed at low pressure, so the moss comes off without disturbing the bedding underneath
- Growth taken out of the joints as well as off the face, since the joints are what make an entry slippery
- Commercial thresholds degreased with dwell time before rinsing, then sanitised where food waste is involved
- Yards worked in sections round the single gully, with silt lifted out and kept away from a slow drain

Paths, yards and Soho Road frontages
The work splits cleanly by street type. On the terraces between the Soho Road and Handsworth Park it is a front path, a yard and an entry, all reached on foot and all carried in by hand, and the yard is only accessible through the house so somebody needs to be in for that part of the visit. Along the Soho Road it is trading forecourts and thresholds, done early before opening, because that stretch is busy from first thing and nobody wants a hose across their doorway at ten in the morning. Towards Hamstead Road there is real frontage hardstanding on the larger villas, and that cleans conventionally. Handsworth is covered on set days, so booking ahead is the way to get the date you want.
Carrying kit through the hall: what shapes a Handsworth quote
Access counts for as much as area in Handsworth. Every machine, hose and container comes through a front door and down a hall to reach a back yard, or down a metre-wide entry. Small areas therefore cost more per square metre than large ones, which is why the path, the entry and the yard quoted together is much better value than any one of them alone. Condition is the other lever, and a commercial threshold with years of grease in it needs more than one application. Old oil in porous concrete lightens substantially without disappearing, and that gets said first.
Autumn for yards and entries, monthly for Soho Road thresholds
A shaded entry wants doing annually and autumn is the moment, because the point of the job is getting through winter without somebody going over on the way to the bins. Rear yards run on the same annual cycle for the same reason. Original front paths can often go two years, since they sit in more light than anything at the back, though the joints will need the weed growth out on the shorter cycle. Soho Road thresholds are the opposite case entirely: they want a frequent quick pass, monthly or better where food is served, because grease and spillage accumulate in days.

Frequently asked questions
No, and it is a question worth asking before anyone starts. High pressure lifts period path tiles clean out of their bedding and blows the soft material beneath them away, and relaying or replacing Edwardian tiling costs many times what the clean did. Those paths get soft washed at low pressure with the solution doing the work chemically, which lifts the moss and the green without disturbing what holds the tiles in place.
Not at all, it is the normal arrangement on a Handsworth terrace and it is planned for. Equipment comes through the hall with protection down on the floor, and hoses are run the same way. What it does mean is that somebody needs to be in for that part of the visit, so it is worth mentioning at the booking stage, and the yard tends to get done alongside the path so the route through the house is only used once.
Yes, and it is a different job from a domestic one. A takeaway threshold carries food waste and grease, so it needs a degreaser given proper contact time and then a sanitising pass, not more pressure. It is done early, before opening, because that stretch trades from first thing. It also works far better as a frequent short visit than as an occasional heavy one, and it costs less over a year that way.
Those are the one real exception in B21 and yes. The bigger former villas up that way have real frontage hardstanding, usually gravel or tarmac behind a wall, and they clean conventionally. Tarmac takes considerably less pressure than concrete does, because it loosens and the surface dressing lifts, so the method is adjusted and the job simply takes a little longer.
Either household can, once both have agreed. It is a single strip serving both, so cleaning half looks worse than leaving it and does nothing about the slipperiness of the rest, which is why it is quoted as one length. The gate needs unlocking and the bins and bikes moving beforehand, because everything comes down that entry by hand and there is no way round it.
Not on cleaning as such. What matters more in practice is the tree cover along those roads, which puts a heavy leaf load onto paths and yards through autumn and leaves tannin staining behind on flagging and concrete. That staining needs a chemical treatment with dwell time rather than more pressure, and where it has sat for several seasons it lightens a great deal without always vanishing entirely.
