Handsworth Wood Driveway Cleaning, Shaded Edges First
Driveways here are long, and that changes how the job should be priced as well as how it is done. A Handsworth Wood villa typically sits well back behind a sweep of block paving or tarmac wide enough for several cars, and on most of them the centre, which gets sun and tyre traffic, is in reasonable order. It is the edges, under the planting and in permanent shade, that go green and mossy.
The other surfaces are the ones people forget: a side path down the flank to the garden, steps up to a raised front door, a rear terrace under a mature tree, and the strip where the paving meets the house. We can take the lot in one visit, and a driveway on its own is just as welcome.

Damp shaded edges on long Handsworth Wood drives
Shade and leaf are what drive this work in B20. Mature planting along the frontages keeps the outer metre of a long drive damp for most of the year, so moss and algae take hold there while the middle stays clear. Then the autumn leaf load sits on the paving, and tannin stains block paving and concrete a rusty brown that no amount of brushing shifts. Most of these drives were also laid decades ago and the kiln-dried sand has long since washed out of the joints, so weed growth arrives along that same damp strip. Steps up to a raised entrance are the safety part of the job, because steps are where a slip actually happens.
- Long drives where moss and algae are confined to the shaded outer edges
- Leaf tannin staining from the heavy autumn drop, which brushing does not remove
- Joints emptied of sand over decades, so weeds return along the same damp strip
- Steps to raised front doors, where algae is a fall risk, well beyond an appearance issue
- Side paths and rear terraces under mature trees, usually greener than the drive itself
Identifying the surface before any pressure is chosen
We identify the surface before anything is switched on, because block paving, concrete, tarmac and older brick each want a different pressure. Sound block and concrete take rotary cleaning at a controlled pressure, which washes evenly, without the striped effect a hand lance gives across a large area. Tarmac gets noticeably less, since it loosens under a hard hit. Anything running up against render or older brickwork at the house is soft-washed instead. Joints are cleared of moss and weed, and re-sanding, where needed, is quoted separately and agreed before we start.
- Surface identified first, with the pressure set to it, never to the machine’s maximum
- Rotary cleaning across large areas, so a long drive does not finish up striped
- Soft-wash where the paving runs against render or older brickwork
- Re-sanding quoted separately at the quote wherever the joints need it, not raised once the job is done

Drives, side paths and steps in B20
Spring is the season, once the winter growth has shown itself, and B20 is covered on set days about twenty-eight minutes from our base, so spring slots are worth booking ahead. The frontages along Handsworth Wood Road and the streets towards Handsworth Golf Club carry the heaviest planting and the worst shaded edges; the newer housing near Hamstead has shorter, more open drives.
Pricing the green edges, not every square metre
We price by area and condition, and we measure a long drive rather than eyeing it up from the gate. The good news on most drives here is that the whole surface rarely needs the same treatment: where the centre is sound and only the shaded metre either side is green, we price the work that is needed instead of the square metres that exist. Steps, a side path and a rear terrace added to the same visit cost far less than booking them separately later. Two things we flag before starting: old oil in porous concrete lightens substantially without always vanishing, and cleaned block paving needs its joints re-sanded or the blocks work loose, which is quoted separately.
Each spring, with steps and side paths kept to it
Once a year in spring suits most drives here, mainly because the shaded edges regrow within twelve months under this much tree cover however well they were cleaned. Steps and a sloping side path are the parts worth keeping to that interval even if the main drive could wait, since that is a safety interval, not a cosmetic one. Open frontages on the newer housing towards Hamstead often stretch to two years comfortably.

Frequently asked questions
No, usually less than people fear. We measure it and quote by area, but on most B20 drives the middle is in decent condition and the shaded edges are doing the damage, so we price the treatment the surface needs instead of charging a full rate across every square metre of it.
Yes, it can, at the pressure people use on concrete. Tarmac loosens and the surface dressing lifts, so we drop the pressure and accept that it takes a little longer. Block paving and sound concrete tolerate rotary cleaning at working pressure, and we will tell you which surface you have.
Yes, usually, and re-sanding is quoted separately. Cleaning takes out whatever kiln-dried sand is left in the joints, and without it the blocks shift and the weeds come back faster. On the older drives here much of that sand has gone already, so the quote shows the re-sanding as its own line from the start.
In most cases, yes. Tannin from a heavy autumn drop soaks into the surface of block paving and concrete and needs a chemical treatment with dwell time, not more pressure. Where it has sat for several seasons it lightens a great deal without always disappearing entirely, and the quote tells you which to expect.
Yes, and it is also the right order: clear the gutter first so the overflow that was greening the paving stops, then clean the paving.
