Acocks Green Driveway and Patio Cleaning for Shaded Side Drives
The Acocks Green semi grid was laid out with side driveways, and that changes the job. What we clean here is typically a strip of block paving or concrete running down the side of the house to a garage or a rear parking spot, plus the path and any steps beside it. That strip is shaded by the house on one side and often by a fence or a hedge on the other, so it stays damp for most of the year and greens up faster than an open frontage would.
Add the canal green corridor and the mature street trees and you get the local pattern: moss and algae rather than oil and staining. On a north-facing side path that is a grip problem before it is an appearance one, because a side entry is the route people take to the bins in the dark. The 1920s municipal stock brings a further consideration, since the path often runs hard against pebbledash render and pressure at that junction causes damp, not cleanliness.

Shaded side drives where moss outlasts the summer
Shade is what drives the demand here, and B27 has an unusual amount of it at ground level. A side driveway between two houses gets direct sun for an hour or two at most, so the algae never dries out and the moss in the block joints keeps its foothold through the summer. Leaf fall from the street trees and the canal corridor then rots down into the joints and feeds it. The result is a surface that looks tired and, more to the point, goes genuinely slippery through autumn and winter on exactly the narrow route people use to get bins and bikes out to the road.
- Side driveways shaded by the house on one flank and a fence or hedge on the other, so they never fully dry out
- Moss and algae in the block paving joints, the usual B27 problem, with oil staining a minor one
- Leaf fall off the street trees and the canal corridor rotting down into the joints and feeding the growth
- Narrow side entries and steps used for bins and bikes, where lost grip is a fall risk more than an eyesore
- Paths running hard against pebbledash render on the 1920s municipal houses, where high pressure drives water into the wall
Moderate pressure on blocks, soft-wash against pebbledash
We identify the surface before anything is switched on. Sound concrete and block paving take rotary cleaning at moderate pressure, which is all that moss needs and is deliberately short of what would strip the kiln-dried sand out of the joints. Anywhere the path runs against pebbledash or render we drop to a soft-wash, because forcing water into that junction turns a cleaning job into a damp one. Joints are cleared of moss and weed, adjacent walls and doors are rinsed down, and the displaced silt is bagged for your garden waste, not left heaped by your gate.
- Moderate pressure on sound block paving and concrete, enough for moss without blowing the jointing sand out
- Soft-wash where a path runs against pebbledash or render, so no water is driven into the base of the wall
- Side entry steps and the narrow route to the bins done properly, since that is where the grip actually matters
- Kiln-dried sand replacement quoted separately when the joints need it, and raised before they are emptied

Side drives and shaded paths
Side drives belong to the semi grid: the streets off Westley Road and Yardley Road, and those running down towards Fox Hollies Park, with the canal on the Tyseley side. Spring is the season, once the winter growth has properly shown itself. Properties backing onto the canal corridor tend to be the worst, and the shaded side path is nearly always in poorer condition than the open drive. Along the Warwick Road conversions the forecourts are usually tarmac belonging to the freeholder, so there the booking comes from the freeholder or agent.
Years of moss and the sand in the joints
Area and condition set the price, and in B27 condition means how long the moss has had to establish; oil is seldom the issue. A side drive cleaned last year is quick. A shaded canal-side path that has been green for five years may need a treatment as well as a wash, and we say so at quoting, so a single pass is never sold as the whole answer. Re-sanding is quoted separately when the joints need it: cleaning block paving takes the kiln-dried sand out of the joints and it has to go back, or the blocks work loose. We raise that before we start, not afterwards.
Yearly for shaded side paths and steps, every year or two for open drives
Every one to two years for an open drive in Acocks Green, and annually for the shaded side paths and steps, which regrow faster than anything else on the property. On a north-facing side entry used to get bins out in the dark, treat the annual clean as a safety interval, with the tidier look a bonus. Properties backing onto the canal corridor are the ones we would put on the shorter cycle without hesitation. Spring is the natural slot for either.

Frequently asked questions
Yes, at the pressure the surface can take, which for moss on sound block paving is a moderate setting. Moss lifts easily; what full pressure does is strip the jointing sand and loosen the blocks. In B27 the problem is nearly always moss, and the gentler setting gets you there.
Not once the method changes there, which it does. On the 1920s municipal houses the path often meets render at the base of the wall, and pressure at that junction forces water behind it. We soft-wash that strip instead, which lifts the algae chemically without creating a damp problem you did not have before.
Usually, yes. Cleaning block paving inevitably takes kiln-dried sand out of the joints, and without it the blocks work loose and the moss finds it easier to come back. Re-sanding is quoted separately when the joints need it, and it is settled before we start.
Shade. A side entry between two houses gets very little direct sun, so it never dries properly, and leaf fall from the street trees and the canal corridor rots into the joints and feeds the growth. That is why the side path usually wants cleaning annually and the front every couple of years.
Yes, and on a side entry the steps are the part we would do first. They are the point where a slip happens, especially if that is the route you take to the bins after dark. Grip comes back once the algae is off, and on a shaded flight it is worth repeating every year.
