Carpet Cleaning for Shard End Halls, Stairs and Landings
Carpet cleaning here usually starts with the hall, stairs and landing, and the need comes from one specific cause, which is mud. Houses backing the Cole Valley have a back door that opens more or less onto the Kingfisher Country Park footpaths, and everything that comes off them ends up in the hall, up the stairs and across the landing. Those three areas take almost all of the wear and almost all of the work.
The layouts help. Estate house types repeat, so a hall, stairs and landing in B34 is a known quantity and easy to quote from a description and a couple of photographs. Rooms are much of a muchness too, which makes adding one straightforward. It is better to add a room at the time of booking than to call back three months later, because the setup is paid for either way and a second visit doubles it.

Ground-in grit from the Kingfisher Country Park paths
Ground-in soil is a different problem from a stain, and this estate produces far more of the first. Grit carried in on boots and dog paws works down into the pile and cuts the fibre from below, which is what makes a hall carpet look flat and grey long before it is genuinely worn out. Vacuuming lifts the surface and leaves the rest sitting there. On top of that, rear rooms on the valley side hold damp air, so a carpet next to a back door can carry a musty smell that has nothing to do with how often it gets hoovered. Both of those respond to hot extraction, which is what we bring.
- Hall, stairs and landing carrying mud and grit in off the country park footpaths
- Dog traffic through the back garden all year, not just in winter
- Grit sitting below the pile surface, which flattens a carpet before it truly wears out
- Musty rear rooms on the valley side, where damp air, more than dirt, is the actual cause
- Households wanting the worn route cleaned and the rest left, on a set budget
A thorough dry vacuum first, then extraction
We vacuum thoroughly first, because taking the dry grit out is most of the result, then pre-treat the traffic lanes and give the product time to work before anything gets extracted. Hot water extraction lifts the rest, with a slow pass on the stair treads, which is where a machine is easiest to rush and hardest to do well. Drying is the part that matters in B34: valley-side rooms hold damp air, so we extract as dry as the machine will go and then ask for heating and airflow. We move what can safely be moved and tell you what cannot.
- Dry soil taken out first, since that is what is cutting the pile from underneath
- Traffic lanes pre-treated and given dwell time, not one wet pass and a hope
- Slow passes on the stair treads, which take the heaviest wear in these houses
- Extracted as dry as the machine allows, because rear rooms here are slow to dry in winter

Halls, stairs and the room by the back door
A typical Shard End job is a hall, stairs and landing plus whichever room the back door opens into, for a household on the valley side that has had enough of the mud. Late spring is the natural time, once the mud season is over, and the weeks before Christmas are the other. Shard End carpet work is booked onto set days, so book a little ahead. Getting a machine in is simple here: we park at the door and run the hose straight in, with no stairs up to a flat and no shared entry, so setting up takes very little time.
Hall, stairs and landing, quoted from a photograph
We price by the room and the flight, and because house types repeat across the estate a hall, stairs and landing can usually be quoted from a photograph. Adding a bedroom or a reception room to the same visit is much cheaper than booking it separately, since the setup is the fixed cost and it has already been paid. Heavy soiling on a valley-side hall may want a second pass, which we will mention when we look, never add on afterwards. There is a minimum charge, because setting up the machine takes the same time for one stair carpet as for a whole ground floor.
Once a year for a house backing the park
A hall, stairs and landing in a house backing the park realistically wants doing once a year, and late spring is the natural moment, once the worst of the mud season has finished. Bedrooms and a front room go two or three years without much argument. If there is a dog in the house and a gate onto the park, treat the annual clean of the walked route as maintenance, not a treat.
The carpets looks clean and beautiful, very professional and polite. I would recommend this company

Frequently asked questions
Yes. That is where the mud from the park ends up, and cleaning the route while leaving the bedrooms alone is a perfectly rational way to spend the money. There is a minimum charge, so if there is a room you were half thinking about, adding it now costs much less than a second visit will.
Usually a few hours, but allow most of a day in cold, damp weather, and longer again in a rear room on the valley side, where the air is damp and still. We extract as dry as the machine allows and after that it is heating and airflow: doors open, heating on low, a window on the latch.
Usually, yes, because mud is soil, not a dye, and hot extraction is very good at soil. What will not come out is the place where grit has already cut the fibre, which reads as a dull grey lane and is wear. We will point out which of the two it is before we start, not after you have paid.
Only the electricity: we bring the water. We do need a socket for the machine, which is never an issue in an occupied house, and the van sits on the drive so the hoses run straight in through the door. If the property is empty and the electricity has been turned off, tell us beforehand, because it changes what we need to load.
It might be, and extraction will answer that quickly. But on the valley side of this estate a musty rear room is often about damp air and poor ventilation, in which case cleaning the carpet improves things for a while and then it comes back. Better to know that up front than pay twice.
