Blackheath Carpet Cleaning for Halls, Stairs and Lounges
Carpet cleaning in Blackheath is mostly about the walked route: the hall, the stairs and the landing, often with a lounge added. People here walk to the market and the High Street, so the hall and the bottom three treads take everything that comes off the pavement. Pricing is per room, with a minimum charge that covers the machine set-up, so booking the hall, stairs, landing and a lounge together makes the most of a visit.
Blackheath is a Sandwell town about twenty-five minutes from our Selly Oak B29 base, covered on set days, so a carpet clean is worth booking ahead onto one of them. The estate semis and the 1990s town-centre houses are straightforward to set up at; on the terraced streets we plan around where the van can stand.

Street grit from the market and the High Street in the first metre of hall
Two things wear carpets down here. The first is the walking. This is a town where the market and the High Street are used on foot, so street grit arrives on shoes all year and lands in the first metre of the hall before anything else touches it. Grit is abrasive, and it cuts the base of the pile as well as dirtying it, which is why a hall and a staircase wear out years ahead of the bedrooms. The second is changeovers on the rented terraces and ex-council semis, where the agreement frequently names professional cleaning outright and the tenant has to show it was done.
- Street grit walked in from the market and the High Street, landing in the first metre of the hall
- Straight staircases in the council semis opening off the hall, so one strip takes the whole household
- Compact rooms, where the per-room minimum is a larger share of the bill unless rooms are booked together
- Rented terraces and ex-council semis whose agreements specifically require professional carpet cleaning
- Paler carpets in the 1990s town-centre houses, where traffic marking shows long before the pile is worn
A test patch, then slow dry passes to lift pavement grit
Colour fastness gets a test patch in a hidden corner, and then the pile is vacuumed dry, slowly, over several passes. Most of what a Blackheath hall holds is dry pavement grit, and wetting that before it has been lifted only turns it to mud down at the backing. The pre-spray is left to dwell and is worked in with agitation, never hurried. A hand tool does the staircase, one tread at a time, and the nosings get the longest of it, because that edge is where a pile actually goes. Then hot water extraction, run hard with light wetting, so a room usually dries in a few hours; allow most of a day in cold, damp weather.
- A long, slow dry vacuum first, since street grit comes out dry and wetting it wastes the rest of the visit
- One tread at a time with a hand tool, with the nosing edge given proper work
- Extracted hard with light wetting, so a room usually dries in a few hours
- A straight word first where the pile is worn out, because extraction cannot put fibre back

Halls, stairs and the first metre of the house
Hall, stairs and landing together, often with a lounge added, is the natural booking for the estate semis and for the 1990s town-centre houses, whose carpets are paler and show everything. The terraced rentals are best done once one tenant has gone and before the next arrives. October and the fortnight or so ahead of Christmas are when people want it done, so those dates are worth booking early. Parking decides how we set up on the older streets, because the machine and the hoses have to come from the van to the door, so on a terrace we ask whether anybody can keep a space free outside for an hour or two.
Planning a Blackheath booking around the per-room minimum
The rate is charged by the room, a staircase counting as one, with a minimum charge under it covering the set-up and the machine. That minimum is the number to plan around in houses with compact rooms. A single small bedroom is poor value on its own. Hall, stairs, landing and one reception room on the same visit is roughly the point at which the price per room stops stinging. Anything badly soiled, anything an animal has caused, and stains needing their own treatment all put time on. Where a stair carpet has worn through on the nosings we point that out before you book, because cleaning a worn carpet does not make it new and the money is better kept.
Halls and stairs yearly where people walk to the shops
Twelve to eighteen months suits most households here, and closer to twelve for a hall and staircase in a house where people walk to the shops daily, since grit shortens the life of a carpet as well as dirtying it. Six to twelve months with animals, toddlers or hay fever in the house. A rented property is best done between tenancies whatever the interval, because that is the one moment the rooms are empty and the job can be finished in a single pass.

Frequently asked questions
Yes, and it is the part that has earned it, because every journey through the house crosses it. Value is the difficulty: the minimum charge applies either way. Put the hall and the landing on the same visit, or a front room. It is very little more and it is the difference between paying for the set-up and paying for the work.
Once it feels dry underfoot, which is usually a few hours; allow most of a day in cold, damp weather. Rooms on the sheltered valley side of the town can take a little longer than the ones higher up. We extract hard and keep the wetting light, and we will tell you which windows are worth opening for an hour afterwards.
Mostly, yes: usually a large improvement. That grey is street grit ground down into the base of the pile, and a domestic vacuum takes the top off it and leaves the rest sitting there. We vacuum long and slow first, then pre-spray, dwell and extract. The exception is pile that has been trodden flat, which nothing brings back, and we will look at it before you commit.
Dining chairs, a coffee table, a lamp stand: anything light enough to lift safely. Beds, wardrobes and full bookcases we clean around, because risking damage to them or to the floor is not worth it. In a small room that makes a real difference to coverage, so shifting what you reasonably can before we arrive gets more carpet cleaned for the same money.
An invoice with the address on it, the rooms we did and the day we did them, which is the paperwork letting agents ask for. File it with your check-out papers. Once keys are handed back, proving the work happened falls to the tenant and not to us.
