Carpet Cleaning for Cradley Heath Front Rooms and Terrace Stairs
There is no hallway in most of the old Cradley Heath stock. The front door opens off the pavement directly into the front room, so road grit, brick dust and whatever else is underfoot outside gets walked onto carpet immediately, with no mat well and no buffer to catch it. That first stretch of a through-lounge soils and wears much faster than the rest of the floor, and it is what people notice long before the middle of the room starts looking tired.
The stairs are the other half of the work. Terraces of this age normally have a steep, narrow, boxed-in staircase that turns on winders near the top, and every trip through the house uses it. We use a hand tool on stairs like these instead of trying to work a wand round a turn nobody can stand on comfortably. Both jobs are small in area, so grouping rooms into one visit makes sense.

No hallway, one route through the house, and a damp yard
Traffic in a terrace is concentrated in one place. There is one route through the house, front door to front room to back room to kitchen, and everybody in the household walks it several times a day. Because the door gives straight onto the street there is dry grit back in the pile within days of any clean, and dry grit is abrasive: it cuts the fibre underfoot, which is wear, not dirt, and does not come back with any amount of extraction. Yards behind these houses are walled and shaded, so the building runs damp through winter and a carpet left wet too long will smell before it dries. Both of those shape what we can promise you.
- Front doors opening straight onto the pavement, with no hallway or mat well to catch grit before it reaches carpet
- One walked route through the whole house, so every bit of the wear lands on the same strip
- Steep boxed-in staircases turning on winders, which need a hand tool, not a wand
- Small shaded yards and damp rear additions, making drying time a real constraint from October onwards
- Cheap fitted carpet in the rented terraces that is frequently worn rather than dirty
Dry grit out, a hand tool on the winders, then airflow
Dry vacuuming comes first and it is not a formality: most of what sits in a B64 front room carpet is grit off the pavement, and wetting that turns it to mud down in the pile. Then a pre-spray with real dwell time, agitated in, which does the bulk of the actual work. Stains are treated individually before the general clean. Extraction follows, with a hand tool on the winder stairs. Then drying, which needs planning in a small terrace: we open the front and the back to move air through, and if the weather will not allow that we say so and suggest another day.
- Thorough dry vacuum before any water, because pavement grit becomes mud the moment it gets wet
- Hand tool on boxed-in winder staircases instead of dragging a wand round a turn
- Colour-fastness tested first, which matters on the cheap fitted carpet in a lot of the rented stock
- Front and back opened up for airflow, since a mid-terrace with one shaded walled yard dries slowly
More detail on the equipment and the order of work: our carpet cleaning method.
Through-lounges, winders and drying time
The typical B64 carpet job is a front room, a through-lounge, or the stairs and landing, in the terraced streets off the High Street and out towards Haden Hill Park. The newer estate houses on old works land behave more conventionally and dry faster, because they have a proper hall and some insulation. Any month works, though drying is quicker in warmer weather, because a mid-terrace with one small walled yard behind it moves very little air in February. We reach B64 from Selly Oak in about twenty-five minutes and cover it on a set day.
Through-lounge and stairs together, and where wear limits the result
Pricing is per room and per flight of stairs, and in Cradley Heath most people do the through-lounge and the stairs on the same visit, which is the natural pairing anyway. Heavy soiling and individual stain work add time and cost. Before you book we tell you where extraction will and will not help: where the pile has been walked through on the strip inside the front door, that is wear, extraction will not restore it, and we would sooner you kept your money than paid us to demonstrate it.
Yearly for the strip inside the door, and between tenancies
Twelve months is about right for the strip inside a front door that opens onto the street, even where the rest of the room could comfortably wait longer. Households with pets or young children do better on six to twelve. Rented terraces want one at the end of each tenancy, and it is worth checking the agreement first because some make it compulsory. On a two-year let a clean midway is worth having, since grit left in the pile is what causes the wear in the first place.
The carpets looks clean and beautiful, very professional and polite. I would recommend this company

Frequently asked questions
Because there is nothing between it and the pavement. Terraces here open straight off the street, so there is no hall and no mat well to take the grit off shoes, and it all lands on the same metre of carpet. Extraction lifts the soiling out of it, but that strip will always be the first part of the room to go.
Yes. Boxed-in winder staircases are standard in these houses. We use a hand tool on them, because a wand cannot be worked safely on a winder and it does a poor job of the treads and risers anyway.
Usually, yes. Drying is usually a few hours with the front and back open, though you should allow most of a day in cold, damp weather, and a mid-terrace in winter is at that end, because one small walled yard behind the house gives little airflow.
Sometimes, and sometimes not. There is a real difference between soiling, which extraction lifts very well, and wear, where the pile has been flattened or walked through. We will look before you commit, and if the answer is that the carpet is worn out, not dirty, we will tell you and you can spend the money elsewhere.
Yes, on the Cradley Heath set day. A single room is fine, though most people here add the stairs while the machine is set up, since the through-lounge and the stairs carry the same traffic.
